Chapter 5 - THE GALA OF RECKONING

"Watch her face when she realizes she didn't just lose the billionaire—she lost everything."The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of flashing lights, diamonds, and haute couture. The media wall outside was crowded with reporters, and the name on everyone’s lips was Hartwell. The rumors of the previous night’s disaster had already begun to leak into the tabloids, though Leonard’s PR team had worked overtime to spin it as a "minor family disagreement."

When the Hartwell family limousine pulled up to the red carpet, Leonard, Meredith, and Sloane stepped out. Sloane wore an emerald green gown, her smile tight and forced as she waved to the cameras. They thought they were here to repair the damage. They believed Alessandro was ready to negotiate a settlement to avoid an international scandal.

As they entered the main ballroom, Meredith spotted Alessandro standing near the grand staircase. He looked magnificent in a classic black tuxedo.

“Alessandro,” Meredith said, walking up to him with her head held high. “We received your invitation. I’m glad to see you’ve come to your senses. Family scandals are so tedious for business, don't you agree?”

Alessandro did not answer. He simply looked past her.

The brass doors at the top of the staircase opened.

A hush fell over the crowd as Evelyn descended the stairs. She wore a stunning midnight-blue velvet gown that seemed to absorb the light around her. Her hair was swept up, revealing the diamond necklace that had belonged to Alessandro’s grandmother—the ultimate symbol of the Valdieri alliance. She did not look like the quiet, hidden daughter from the kitchen. She looked like a queen.

“What is she doing here?” Sloane hissed, her hands clenching into fists. “Mother, she’s wearing the Valdieri diamonds!”

Leonard stepped forward, his voice low and threatening. “Evelyn, stop this charade right now. We have the medical documents ready to drop to the press. Don't ruin your sister’s future.”

Evelyn stopped on the bottom step, looking down at her father. For the first time in her life, she felt absolutely no fear.

“Go ahead, Dad,” Evelyn said, her voice carrying through the silent room. “Release them. But before you do, you might want to look at the screens behind you.”

The massive digital displays around the ballroom, which usually showed art pieces and sponsor logos, suddenly flickered.

Instead of logos, they displayed financial spreadsheets. Bank routing numbers. Wire transfer receipts from the Cayman Islands. And right at the top, a recorded video clip from that afternoon.

The video showed Richard Vance sitting in a federal interrogation room, flanked by two FBI agents, speaking clearly into a microphone: “It was Leonard’s idea. He forced me to forge Evelyn’s signature. We’ve been skimming from the charity for three years to pay off his gambling debts in Macau.”

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Flashing lights blinded the family as reporters realized what was happening.

“No!” Meredith screamed, covering her face. “Turn it off! Turn it off!”

Two federal agents in dark suits stepped out from the crowd, moving directly toward Leonard and Meredith.

“Leonard Hartwell, Meredith Hartwell,” the lead agent said, producing a pair of handcuffs. “You are under arrest for wire fraud, grand larceny, and corporate forgery.”
