Chapter 4 - The Ringing PhoneBefore Alexander could formulate a response, my phone began to vibrate violently against the glass desktop.

I glanced at the screen flashing in bold letters: MOTHER.
Without a word, I picked up the phone, hit speakerphone, and laid it right in the center of Alexander’s desk.
“Where are you?!” Elena’s voice shrieked through the quiet office, echoing off the glass walls with piercing clarity. “If you took that baby to some media outlet, or if you dared go near Alexander Vale, I swear on your life I will have you destroyed! You crawl back to the apartment right now and fix this!”
The silence in the penthouse office became absolute.
Alexander stared at the phone, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. He leaned slowly across the desk, bringing his face close to the microphone.
“Elena,” Alexander said, his tone smooth, quiet, and terrifyingly lethal. “Your extortion racket ends today.”
On the other end of the line, Elena let out a sharp, choked gasp. “A-Alexander... Sir, listen to me, the girl is unhinged—”
Click.
Alexander severed the call with a single tap of his finger. He looked up at me, a profound shift occurring in his expression. The suspicion in his eyes was replaced by a sharp, calculating respect.
“What is your name again?” he asked.

“Maya,” I said. “And I’m three months away from my master’s degree in forensic accounting.”
Alexander slowly leaned back in his leather chair, a faint, dangerous smile touching the corner of his mouth. “Maya, how fast can you help me dismantle my ex-fiancée and your mother?”
