Chapter 9 - The Custody HearingThree weeks later.

The family court of Cook County was packed with media reporters drawn by the sensational corporate scandal involving Vale Meridian Capital and the dismantled De La Rosa extortion ring.

In the courtroom, Claudia sat at the defense table, flanked by a public defender who looked like he wanted to dissolve into the floorboards. She played the part of the weeping, victimized mother to absolute perfection, dabbing at her dry eyes with a tissue and begging the judge for emergency custody of her son.

“Your Honor, I made a terrible mistake driven by postpartum vulnerability!” Claudia wailed dramatically. “My wicked sister and Mr. Vale stole my baby from me while I was abroad seeking medical treatment!”

Alexander’s lead attorney stood up smoothly, adjusting his tie.

“Your Honor, we submit Exhibit A,” the attorney stated calmly, handing a digital flash drive to the bailiff. “A recovered audio file from the cloud server of Cedar Lane Consulting, recorded three days before the defendant fled the country.”

The bailiff plugged the drive into the courtroom audio system.

The courtroom speakers crackled to life, broadcasting Claudia’s sharp, callous voice across the room:

“I don’t care about the kid, Mom. He’s just a million-dollar lottery ticket tied to Vale’s bank account. Once I get to London, let Maya change the diapers. I’m done with him.”

The audio echoed off the oak paneling. The courtroom fell into a stunned, dead silence.

Claudia turned completely white, staring in horror at the judge’s bench.

The judge didn't even hesitate. He struck his gavel with a sharp, echoing crack.

“Custody of the minor child, Mateo Vale, is hereby granted in full, permanent legal guardianship to his biological father, Alexander Vale, with protective orders barring the biological mother from contact,” the judge declared firmly. “Furthermore, this court refers the mother and grandmother to federal prosecutors for expanded perjury and fraud charges.”

As the gavel came down, Claudia buried her face in her hands and began to wail for real—not out of grief for her son, but out of absolute terror for the prison sentence waiting for her.
