Chapter 9 - THE RECKONINGThe music cut off instantly.

The laughter died in the throats of fifty high-ranking syndicate bosses, corrupt politicians, and armed guards scattered across the grand ballroom. Every head turned toward the entrance.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the cold night air, was Viktor Vance.
He wasn't a ghost. He wasn't freezing in a ravine. He was sitting tall in his wheelchair, his black coat draped over his shoulders, his dark eyes burning with absolute, terrifying authority. Beside him stood Mara, calm and resolute, and towering behind them like a mythical beast of vengeance was Bear, baring white teeth at the paralyzed crowd.
Dante Vance stood near the grand fireplace at the far end of the room, a crystal glass of scotch frozen halfway to his mouth. His face drained of all color, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror.
"V-Viktor?" Dante stammered, dropping his glass. It shattered against the marble floor, the amber liquid splattering across the pristine white stone like blood. "No... that's impossible. We left you in the snow!"
"You always were careless with your details, little brother," Viktor's voice boomed across the silent ballroom, rich with chilling calm.
Dante’s bodyguards immediately reached for their sidearms, stepping forward to form a wall around their new master.
"Don't do it," Viktor warned, raising his pistol with absolute steadiness. "Every man who draws a weapon tonight dies where he stands."
"Kill him! Kill him now!" Dante shrieked, panic breaking through his polished facade as he scrambled backward behind the mahogany bar.
Before the guards could clear their holsters, a low, thunderous growl shook the room. Bear launched himself forward, a hundred and fifty pounds of fury slamming directly into the lead gunman, sending him crashing into a display case of priceless antiques.
Simultaneously, the side doors of the ballroom burst open, and a dozen loyalist syndicate enforcers—men Viktor had secretly contacted using an encrypted burner phone during the drive—flooded into the room, their weapons instantly trained on Dante’s mercenaries.
The guards froze, looking around the room, realizing in a single heartbeat that the loyalty they thought they had bought belonged to whoever held the crown. One by one, weapons clattered to the marble floor.
Dante, cornered behind the bar, pulled a small silver pistol from his jacket with shaking hands, aiming it frantically across the room.
"If I go down, you go with me, cripple!" Dante screamed, his finger tightening on the trigger.
Mara didn't think. She lunged forward, grabbing a heavy silver champagne bucket from a nearby table and hurling it across the room with all her might.

The heavy metal struck Dante squarely across the wrist, knocking the pistol from his grip and sending it skittering across the floor.
Viktor rolled his wheelchair forward, stopping ten feet from his brother. The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute.
