Chapter 13 - Shadows in the Rearview

Two weeks later, the illusion of total peace was shattered by a single, uninvited visitor.

Serena was weeding the front flower bed while the boys played football with Victor in the backyard when a sleek, black sedan pulled up the gravel drive. It didn't belong to the local delivery service, and it didn't belong to any of Victor’s old associates.

The door opened, and a tall, impeccably dressed man stepped out. Silver hair at the temples, cold gray eyes, and a tailored suit that screamed old-money corporate ruthless elegance.

Arthur Sterling. Eleanor’s brother, and a man whose fingers still controlled a massive chunk of Wall Street and underground syndicate debts.

Serena stood up, brushing dirt from her jeans, and planted herself firmly between the stranger and the backyard gate.

“Visiting hours are over, Mr. Sterling,” Serena said, her voice dropping into the icy register she had perfected during her first week at the estate.

Arthur stopped, looking her up and down with open disdain. “You must be the little Brooklyn gold-digger who managed to wrap Victor around her finger and dismantle the Marcone syndicate in one week.”

“I’m the woman who keeps you off this property,” Serena fired back without blinking. “Turn the car around before I let the golden retriever out. He’s been eating raw steak all morning and he hates uninvited guests.”

Before Arthur could retort with a sharp threat, heavy, measured footsteps crunched on the gravel behind Serena.

Victor appeared around the side of the house, his sleeves rolled up, his eyes dead, dark, and flat as the abyss. The temperature in the driveway dropped ten degrees instantly.

“Arthur,” Victor said softly, his voice a dangerous purr. “Brave of you to show your face outside your Manhattan penthouse.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened. “You think retiring to the suburbs and playing house washes away your sins, Victor? The council isn't happy about you stepping down. And your new little domestic life won’t survive what’s coming.”

Victor didn’t blink. He stepped past Serena, closing the distance between them until Arthur was forced to look up into the eyes of a man who had ruled the New York underworld for a decade.

“Try me,” Victor whispered, his voice laced with absolute lethal finality. “Step foot on this property again, Arthur, and I won’t just dismantle your business. I’ll feed you to the harbor sharks yourself.”

Arthur swallowed hard, turned on his heel, and got back into his sedan, peeling out of the driveway in a cloud of dust.

Victor exhaled slowly, turning back to Serena. His dangerous aura dissolved instantly, replaced by a deep, aching vulnerability. He reached out, gently cupping her face.

“Are you alright?” Victor asked quietly.

Serena smiled, leaning her cheek into his warm palm. “I told you, Victor. I’m not scared of bad guys anymore. I live with four of them.”
