Chapter 9 - THE NEW DAWNDawn broke over Northern Virginia, casting a pale, cold golden light across the horizon.

I stood on the reinforced observation deck above the bunker, holding a steaming mug of black coffee, watching the first military transport helicopters lift off from the distant tarmac.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out. A secure text message from General Vance at the Pentagon:

“Operation clean sweep complete, Colonel. All rogue sub-contracts terminated. Excellent work. Rest up; briefing for the European theater is tomorrow at 0600.”

I typed a simple reply: “Copy that. Standing by.”

Some people spend their entire lives chasing titles, wealth, and the applause of crowded rooms, assuming that a loud voice and an expensive suit equal true power. They laugh at those they deem small, forgetting a fundamental law of survival:

The most dangerous people in the world are never the ones standing in the spotlight.

They are the ones sitting quietly in the dark, holding the keys to the kingdom.

I took a slow sip of my coffee, turned my back to the rising sun, and walked back down into the command center, ready for whatever war came next.
