Chapter 7 - The Countdown in the Dark“Drop the detonator, Victor,” a calm, steady voice echoed from the shadows behind the crane.

Sterling froze, his thumb hovering over the red trigger button. He spun around, pistol raised, but stopped dead in his tracks.

Standing on top of the flatbed trailer of a semi-truck parked near the property line were four local sheriff’s deputies, their shotguns leveled squarely at Sterling’s chest. Leading them was Sheriff Tom Miller, a man who had known Aunt Rosalyn since they were both in grade school.

“Game’s over, Victor,” Sheriff Miller called out, stepping down into the mud with his badge gleaming under the floodlights. “We’ve been recording your private radio frequency for the last three hours. Every word you just said about the embezzlement, the framing, and the explosives has been transmitted directly to the state attorney general's office.”

Sterling’s face drained of all color. His hand trembled slightly on the detonator. “You’re bluffing. This county belongs to—”

“This county belongs to the people who live here, not corporate ghosts from forty years ago,” Miller interrupted, taking another step forward. “Drop the box, Victor. Now.”

For a second, absolute silence fell over the gas station, broken only by the steady, rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the digital timer strapped to the detonator in Sterling’s hand.

Two minutes and fifteen seconds.

“If I go down,” Sterling whispered, a crazed, desperate look flashing in his eyes, “nobody gets the truth.”

With a violent motion, he slammed his thumb down onto the red button.

“Get down!” Julian roared, tackling Norah into the muddy gravel just as a muffled, subterranean explosion rocked the entire property.

The ground beneath the crater heaved upward in a geyser of dirt, concrete, and shattered asphalt. The crane shrieked as its support cables snapped like thread, sending the massive boom crashing down into the fueling station’s canopy with a deafening explosion of sparks and shattered glass.

Thick smoke and blinding dust billowed into the stormy night sky, plunging Route 9 Fuel & Mart into sudden, chaotic darkness.
