CHAPTER 2: The Hatch Beneath the Marble

The workers arrived before sunset.
Daniel stood in the mansion hallway with his daughter in his arms, watching as the marble floor was cut open piece by piece.
Emily kept pacing behind him.
“This is insane,” she snapped. “You’re destroying our home because of a child’s dream?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Because Lily’s tiny fingers were wrapped tightly around his neck.
And she kept whispering the same thing.
“She’s cold, Daddy.”
Then the workers stopped.
Beneath the marble was an old iron hatch.
Sealed with rust.
Hidden for decades.
Daniel’s face went pale.
“That wasn’t on the original plans.”
The moment the hatch was forced open, a rotten, icy smell rushed into the hallway.
Several guests covered their mouths.
A narrow staircase led down into darkness.
Daniel grabbed a flashlight and stepped forward.
Emily suddenly screamed,
“Don’t go down there!”
Everyone turned to her.
Her face was white.
Too white.
Daniel stared at his wife.
“How did you know there was something down there?”
Emily’s lips trembled.
“I… I didn’t.”
But Lily pointed at her mother.
“The lady says Mommy has the key.”
The hallway fell silent.
Daniel slowly looked at Emily’s necklace.
Hanging beneath her diamond pendant was a tiny black key.
A key he had never noticed before.
Emily backed away.
“Daniel, listen to me…”
But it was too late.
Daniel descended the stairs.
At the bottom, he found a small underground room.
Dusty.
Locked from the outside.
And on the wall, scratched into the stone with trembling hands, were five words:
“Daniel, she is not yours.”
Daniel’s breath stopped.
Then his flashlight landed on an old wooden box.
Inside was a stack of letters.
All addressed to him.
From his mother.
And the final letter contained a secret so horrifying that Daniel nearly collapsed.
His mother had never abandoned him.
She had discovered Emily’s family’s plan.
They had switched Daniel’s newborn daughter at birth…
because the real Ashford heir had been hidden somewhere no one would ever search.
Daniel looked upstairs.
Lily was crying.
Emily was running.
And from inside the box, Daniel pulled out one last photograph.
A newborn baby.
A hospital bracelet.
And a name.
Lily Ashford was not the child they stole.
May you like
She was the child they failed to bury.
