chapter 1

No one expected the most unforgettable moment of the night to come from the smallest guest in the room.
The grand charity gala glittered with crystal chandeliers, elegant gowns, and billionaires raising glasses to celebrate another year of success. Cameras flashed. Reporters smiled. Everyone was busy trying to be seen.
Until a tiny voice whispered...
"Can you... hold my hand?"
Seven-year-old Lily sat quietly in her wheelchair near the edge of the ballroom. Her pale cream dress looked beautiful, but it couldn't hide the sadness in her eyes. Since the accident two years ago, she hadn't taken a single step on her own.
Doctors had given her parents little hope.
"She may never walk again."
Those words had become a life sentence.
Most guests politely smiled at Lily before quickly looking away. They felt sorry for her, but no one wanted to ruin the glamorous atmosphere by thinking about tragedy.
Then a young boy, no older than eight, slowly walked toward her.
He wasn't dressed like the wealthy children running around the ballroom. His jacket was old. His shoes were worn. Someone whispered that he was probably the son of one of the catering staff.
He stretched out his hand.
"Would you trust me?"
Lily looked at him, confused.
Her mother immediately stepped forward.
"Honey, don't..."
But before she could finish, Lily gently placed her tiny hand into his.
The entire ballroom fell strangely quiet.
The boy smiled.
"Stand up with me."
Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.
"This is cruel."
"Someone stop him."
"She can't walk."
Yet the boy never looked nervous.
He simply tightened his grip and softly counted...
"One..."
Lily's fingers trembled.
"Two..."
Her breathing became faster.
"Three."
Slowly...
Very slowly...
Lily pushed herself upward.
The wheelchair rolled backward.
Gasps echoed across the ballroom.
Her knees shook violently.
Tears filled her eyes.
For the first time in two years...
She was standing.
Not perfectly.
Not steadily.
But standing.
The room exploded with applause. Her mother collapsed into tears. Even strangers began crying as Lily took one tiny, trembling step toward the mysterious boy.
Everyone believed they had just witnessed a miracle.
But no one noticed the expression on the boy's face.
He wasn't surprised.
He wasn't excited.
It was almost as if...
He had expected this to happen all along.
Then, just as Lily reached for him again, a black luxury SUV screeched to a stop outside the ballroom.
Three men in dark suits rushed inside.
The moment they saw the little boy...
Their faces turned completely pale.
One of them whispered into his earpiece,
"We found him."
The boy looked toward the entrance...
And quietly said words that froze everyone in place.
May you like
"They weren't supposed to find me yet."
