Chapter 5 - THE BALLROOM AT THE DRAKEThe Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of velvet, crystal chandeliers, and ice sculptures. Champagne flowed freely as Richard Sterling, Vice President of Procurement at Mercer Dynamics, clinked glasses with twenty of his high-society friends and family members. At the main table sat Greg Vance, wearing a tailored tuxedo paid for with stolen wages.

"To success, family, and a lucrative New Year!" Sterling toasted, raising his glass of vintage Dom Pérignon.
"To success!" the crowd echoed.
The heavy oak doors at the back of the ballroom swung open with a dramatic thud.
The music didn't stop immediately, but a hush swept through the room as David Mercer strode down the center aisle. He didn't come alone. Beside him walked Emily Harper, dressed in her faded blue janitorial uniform, holding the hand of her five-year-old daughter.
Richard Sterling nearly dropped his glass. He forced a strained, aristocratic laugh and stepped forward.
"David! What a surprise! I didn't know you were in town for the holidays. But... what is this? Who are these people?"
"You know who she is, Richard," David said, his voice echoing across the ballroom. "This is Emily Harper. She keeps the floor beneath your desk clean enough for you to rest your designer shoes on."
Greg Vance stood up from the table, his face flushing dark red. "Mr. Mercer, this woman is an entry-level contractor. She has no right to be here—”
"Shut your mouth, Greg," David commanded, his voice dropping an octave, carrying an authority that paralyzed the room. "I just finished a call with the State Attorney General’s Fraud Division."
The room gasped. Several guests lowered their glasses.
"Four hundred thousand dollars," David continued, stepping closer to Sterling. "You and your brother-in-law stole four hundred thousand dollars from the people who work twelve-hour graveyard shifts sweeping your trash. You took three thousand dollars out of Emily’s hands on December first so you could afford this ice sculpture."
Sterling’s face drained of all color. "David, this is a misunderstanding. The vendor allocations were—"

"The police are waiting in the lobby, Richard," David interrupted, pulling a thick document from his coat. "I’ve attached the wire logs, the shell company bank statements, and the forged audit signatures. Your assets have been frozen. Your employment with Mercer Dynamics is terminated for cause, effective five minutes ago."
Two uniformed Chicago Police officers stepped into the ballroom. Within minutes, Sterling and Vance were led out in handcuffs, past their silent, horrified guests.
