Chapter 20 - The View from the Top

Nicholas didn't answer. He turned slowly, his boots dragging heavily against the polished concrete floor, and walked out of the glass doors for the last time. I watched him go until the elevator doors swallowed him up, closing the final chapter of a past that no longer had any power over me.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind. A warm chin rested softly on my shoulder, inhaling the scent of my perfume.

“Everything alright?” Emmett’s deep voice murmured against my ear.

“Never better,” I whispered, leaning back into his embrace, looking out at the endless horizon of the city we had conquered together.

The sun was beginning to set over Manhattan, casting a brilliant, golden glow across the skyscrapers, painting the sky in vibrant shades of amber, violet, and deep blue. It was the color of a light blue dress I once wore to a wedding I thought would break me—the dress that proved you don't need to fit into someone else's narrow world to conquer it.

I wasn't standing in the entrance where the people who "mattered" walked through.

I was standing at the very top of the world. And I had built every single step myself.
