Chapter 9 - Morning Light in the HamptonsThree days later, the sun rose over the Hamptons estate, flooding the nursery with warm, golden light.

The room had been completely gutted. The old mattress was gone, replaced by brand-new furniture, cheerful pastel walls, and zero trace of the psychological torture device that had haunted the house for months.

Grace and June sat cross-legged on the floor, giggling as they built a massive castle out of wooden blocks.

Standing in the doorway, Emma leaned against the doorframe, sipping a cup of black coffee. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, replaced by a quiet, hard-earned peace.

Heavy footsteps approached behind her.

Declan stopped beside her, smelling faintly of cedarwood and expensive espresso. He looked down at his daughters, watching them laugh without the haunting shadow of the 3:00 a.m. screams hanging over them.

"The federal prosecutor dropped all initial inquiries into my syndicate operations," Declan said quietly, keeping his voice low so the girls wouldn't hear. "In exchange for my full cooperation in sweeping clean the remaining corporate corruption tied to Meredith’s co-conspirators. My family is officially clean. No more targets on our backs."

Emma smiled faintly. "I'm glad to hear that, Mr. Shaw. Though I suppose you won't be needing a live-in maid anymore now that the house is safe."

Declan turned his head, his dark eyes fixing on her with an intensity that made her breath hitch.

"The board tried to appoint a new corporate director yesterday," Declan said smoothly. "Someone sharp. Someone fearless. Someone who isn't afraid to cut open a few stuffed animals to find the truth."

Emma raised an eyebrow. "And what did you tell them?"

"I told them the position was already filled," Declan said, reaching out to gently brush a stray lock of hair behind her ear, his touch lingering against her skin. "That is, if the maid is willing to sign a permanent contract."

Grace and June looked up from their blocks, grinning mischievously at the two of them.

"Say yes, Emma!" June called out happily. "Dad makes terrible pancakes anyway!"

Emma let out a soft laugh, looking up into the eyes of the man who had torn down an empire to protect his children.

"Only if I get to choose the next teddy bear," Emma whispered.

Declan smiled—a rare, genuine, blinding smile that finally chased away the last of the darkness in the house.

"Deal."
