Chapter 4 - The Ambush at Willow Creek

"You aren't going," Roman said, his voice flat and definitive as he slammed the tablet onto the desk. "Donovan, prep the cars. We're going to Pier 4, but we're going with heavy artillery. Viktor wants a war, he'll get one."
"Wait!" Pamela cried, stepping between Roman and the door. "If you go there with guns blazing, he’ll expose everything. He’ll take my babies away! The state will take them, the police—"
"The police don't touch me, Pamela," Roman growled, towering over her. "But my uncle is a rabid dog. He doesn't want a negotiation. He wants you because you are the living proof of a fraud that could strip me of my title. If I lose my title, I can't protect them. I can't protect you."
Suddenly, the lights in the mansion flickered. Once. Twice. Then, the entire estate plunged into total, suffocating darkness.
The backup generators didn't kick in.
"Down!" Roman roared, throwing his body over Pamela as the glass windows of the study shattered into a million pieces.
The deafening roar of automatic gunfire ripped through the night. The walls were chewed to pieces by a hail of bullets. Screams echoed from the courtyard as Roman’s outer security perimeter was breached.
"They're here," Donovan shouted over the din, firing his weapon blindly through the shattered window into the dark gardens. "They didn't wait for sunrise! Viktor betrayed the location!"
Pamela’s heart stopped. The triplets.
"My babies!" she shrieked, crawling out from under Roman’s grip.
"Pamela, stay down!" Roman yelled, but she was already running on pure, unadulterated maternal instinct. She navigated the pitch-black hallway, guided only by the terrified wails of the three infants upstairs.
She burst into the nursery just as a shadow stepped through the balcony doors. A man in tactical gear, holding a silenced pistol, was advancing toward the triple crib.
"Get away from them!" Pamela screamed. She grabbed a heavy bronze statue of an angel from a side table and hurled it with every ounce of strength she possessed.
The statue struck the intruder squarely in the temple. He groaned, stumbling backward through the glass railing of the balcony, falling into the darkness below.
Pamela rushed to the crib, scooping up two of the babies into her arms, while the third clung to her leg, crying frantically.

Roman appeared in the doorway, his suit jacket gone, his white shirt stained with blood from a graze on his shoulder. He held a smoking firearm.
"We have to go. Now," he commanded, grabbing the third baby and pulling Pamela against his chest as the sound of footsteps rushed up the grand staircase. "The house is compromised. We're taking the underground tunnel to the garage."
