Chapter 5 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Hook: The rival mob launches a final, desperate siege on the mansion, forcing Waverly to make an unthinkable choice to save the twins. The peace was short-lived.
The next evening, the mansion’s outer perimeter sensors went completely dark. Victor Moretti knew his plot with Dr. Yates had been exposed. He knew that once Lawson Mercer realized his children were recovering, the full, terrifying wrath of the Mercer family would wipe the Moretti Syndicate off the map.
It was an all-or-nothing play.
A convoy of armored SUVs smashed through the outer steel gates of the estate, unleashing a barrage of heavy automatic gunfire and explosive charges against the mansion's reinforced walls. The power was cut instantly, plunging the house into darkness, save for the emergency red backup lights.
"They’re inside the courtyard!" Prescott’s voice boomed over the tactical comms. "Boss, we’re being overwhelmed! Moretti brought mercenary contractors!"
Lawson stood in the center of the medical wing, a heavy tactical vest strapped over his chest, two automatic rifles slung over his shoulders. His face was no longer sorrowful. It was stone. It was death.
"Prescott, hold the grand staircase," Lawson ordered calmly into his earpiece. "Kill anything that breathes."
He turned to Waverly, who was already packing a small medical kit, preparing to move the children.
"There is a secure panic room behind the wine cellar," Lawson said, grabbing her by the shoulders. His gaze was fierce, burning with a desperate intensity. "Take Jonah and Blythe. Do not open the door for anyone except me or Prescott. If anyone else tries to break in... use this."
He pressed a small, sleek Glock 19 into her hands. It felt heavy and cold against her palms.
"I’ve never shot a gun," Waverly whispered, her heart pounding against her ribs.
"Point and pull," Lawson said, kissing his children’s foreheads one last time. "Live, Waverly. Please."
Before she could answer, Lawson vanished into the smoky, red-lit hallway, the deafening roar of his assault rifle immediately echoing through the house.
Waverly didn't waste a second. She disconnected the twins from their stationary monitors, leaving only the portable battery-operated IV pumps. She lifted Jonah into her arms, while Blythe, remarkably finding a sudden burst of adrenaline-fueled strength, held tightly onto Waverly’s jacket, her small legs wrapped around her waist.
Waverly moved through the chaotic, shaking house. The air was thick with the scent of cordite, blood, and burning drywall. She descended the back servants' stairs, navigating the dark concrete corridors toward the wine cellar.
Suddenly, a heavy boot kicked open the door at the top of the cellar stairs.
"Down here!" a harsh voice shouted.
Waverly sprinted into the wine cellar, her heart hammering. She saw the hidden reinforced steel door of the panic room disguised behind a massive rack of vintage bottles. She pushed the panel, and the heavy door hissed open.
She shoved Jonah and Blythe inside. "Stay down! Don't make a sound!"
Before she could step inside herself, a heavy hand grabbed her by her hair, violently ripping her backward out of the panic room. She crashed hard against the stone floor of the wine cellar, the breath escaping her lungs in a sharp gasp.
Victor Moretti stood over her, a wicked, sadistic smile stretching across his scarred face. Behind him stood two heavily armed mercenaries.
"Well, well," Moretti sneered, looking past her into the panic room where the two terrified children were hiding. "The famous savior of the Mercer bloodline. You’ve caused me a lot of trouble, girl."
Moretti stepped toward the panic room door, raising a heavy silver revolver. "Lawson took everything from me. It’s only fair I take his future."
Waverly felt a cold, blinding fury ignite inside her chest. The memory of her son’s cold hand merged with the terrifying image of Moretti pointing a weapon at Jonah and Blythe.
She didn't think. She didn't hesitate.
Her fingers found the grip of the Glock Lawson had given her. She raised it with both hands, pointed it directly at Moretti’s chest, and pulled the trigger.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
The gun kicked violently in her hands. Two bullets struck Moretti squarely in the chest, sending him crashing backward into a rack of wine bottles, shattering them in a torrential downpour of dark red liquid that looked exactly like blood.

The two mercenaries immediately raised their weapons, aiming at Waverly.
"Die, bitch," one growled.
