Chapter 6 - The New Dawn

The air outside the detention center was cool and fresh, carrying the scent of approaching autumn.

Julian was waiting for me beside the black SUV, holding a travel mug of coffee. He didn't ask how it went. He didn't need to. He knew me better than anyone else in the world.

"The papers are signed," Julian said as I climbed into the passenger seat. "The divorce is official. The judge bypassed the standard waiting period due to the criminal convictions. You are Victoria Whitmore again."

"Victoria Whitmore," I repeated, testing the weight of the name on my tongue. It felt lighter than it had in a decade.

"Where to now?" Julian asked, starting the engine. "The office? The board wants to run some branding ideas by you for the relaunch."

"No," I said, looking out the window as the city skyline slid past. "Take me to the airport."

Julian smiled, a genuine, warm smile that he rarely showed the world. "Where are you going?"

"Somewhere where nobody knows the name Daniel Hayes," I said. "And somewhere where I don't have to wear a midnight-blue gown to feel like myself."

As the SUV merged onto the highway, my phone buzzed in my lap. It was a notification from a social media app.

A video of the gala had gone viral. It had over ten million views. The caption read: “The moment a billionaire’s wife destroyed her cheating husband in 30 seconds.”

The comments were a flood of praise, shock, and awe.

I looked at the screen for a moment, seeing the frozen frame of myself standing in the center of that golden ballroom, calm, unbothered, and entirely in control.

Then, with a swipe of my thumb, I deleted the app.

I didn't need the world's applause. I didn't need the validation of six hundred people under crystal chandeliers.

I had my name back. I had my freedom. And for the first time in twelve years, the future belonged entirely to me.
