Chapter 4 - The Ghost at the Docks

Hook: The ocean never lies; it only hides the bodies of those who trusted the wrong person.

By 4:00 AM, the storm over Palermo had broken. Rain poured in sheets over the industrial shipping yards of the Port of Palermo.

Alessandro stood inside an abandoned crane control room overlooking Pier 4. His suit was soaked with rain and blood—none of it his own. Behind him, Matteo was sitting on a crate, coughing violently but alive. The "poisoned" scotch Bianca had served him had been intercepted by a loyal kitchen staff member whom Matteo had shared a drink with earlier, diluting the dose enough to only cause a severe stomach illness rather than death.

"We tracked Bianca’s burner phone location to this pier," Matteo said, his voice raspy as he tied a bandage around a graze on his arm. "The Russian freighter The Volkov is docked at Pier 4. They’re transferring weapons and narcotics right under our noses, using your family’s logistics permits."

"She has Elena and Clara," Alessandro said, his eyes scanning the containers below. "She knows they are her only leverage. If she leaves the country with them, she wins."

"What’s the play, boss? We don't have enough men to take out a whole Russian crew without starting an international turf war," Matteo warned.

"I don't need an army," Alessandro replied, checking the magazine of his rifle. "I just need to find my fiancée."

Down on the rain-slicked concrete of the pier, a black SUV sat idling next to a massive cargo ship. Bianca stood under a large umbrella held by a towering Russian operative. She had replaced her silk robe with a sharp, black leather trench coat.

Tied up on the ground next to the SUV’s tires were Elena and Clara, shivering in the freezing rain.

"Is the cargo loaded?" Bianca asked the operative, her voice cutting through the sound of the crashing waves.

"Almost," the Russian replied in a heavy accent. "But we have a problem. Vitale’s main perimeter guards aren't responding. He survived the hit at the villa."

Bianca’s jaw tightened. "It doesn't matter. Once we are on that ship, we are in international waters. He can't touch us without starting a war with the Volkov syndicate, and he isn't stupid enough to destroy his own empire over a maid."

"Are you sure about that, Bianca?"

The voice echoed through the shipping containers, distorted by the wind and rain.

The Russian mercenaries instantly drew their weapons, forming a protective circle around Bianca. From the shadows between two massive red containers, a lone figure walked out into the open.

Alessandro Vitale.

He walked without fear, his rifle slung loosely over his shoulder, his eyes locked onto Bianca.

"Alessandro," Bianca laughed, though her voice held a nervous tremor. "You really are a fool. You walked right into a slaughterhouse. Look around you. You are outnumbered, outgunned, and your precious little maid is one bullet away from meeting her maker."

The Russian operative stepped forward, aiming a heavy caliber pistol directly at Alessandro’s chest. "Drop your weapon, Don Vitale. Or we paint this pier with your blood."

Alessandro stopped walking. He looked at Elena, who was crying, hugging Clara tightly against her chest. Then he looked at Bianca.

"You told me your grandmother gave you that emerald necklace, Bianca," Alessandro said, his voice strangely calm despite the guns pointed at him.

Bianca frowned. "What are you talking about?"

"Your grandmother died in a soviet labor camp in 1974," Alessandro revealed, a dark smile spreading across his lips. "I did a full deep-dive into your lineage last night while you were busy trying to kill my underboss. You aren't Bianca Contini. The real Bianca died in an orphanage in Belarus fifteen years ago. You are Katerina Volkova. The daughter of the very man who owns this shipping line."

Bianca’s aristocratic composure completely shattered. Her face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. "And yet, you still let me into your bed. You still let me into your vault. You might know who I am now, Vitale, but it’s too late. Kill him."

The Russian operative tightened his finger on the trigger.

But before he could fire, a red laser dot appeared directly on his forehead. Then another appeared on Bianca’s chest. Within seconds, dozens of red laser beams illuminated the rain, painting every single Russian operative on the pier.
