CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET ROOM BEHIND THE LIBRARY

"Who's there?"
Ethan Cole's voice echoed through the dark mansion.
The thieves froze.
Vanessa's face drained of color.
A moment earlier, she had been calm and confident. Now her hands trembled.
The camera technician looked at her with anger.
"You said he wouldn't wake up."
"He never does," Vanessa whispered.
"Well, he's awake now."
Another alarm beeped.
Then another.
The red security lights along the hallway flickered on.
Panic spread across the faces of the intruders.
"Forget the safe," one of the men said. "We're leaving."
"No!" Vanessa hissed. "Do you understand how much money is inside that study?"
The tallest thief grabbed her arm.
"You lied to us."
"I didn't!"
"You said this would be easy."
Footsteps sounded upstairs.
Slow.
Heavy.
Coming closer.
Ethan was moving.
The thieves looked toward the staircase.
"We're out."
One of them turned toward the garden door.
Then Vanessa did something unexpected.
She blocked the exit.
"No one leaves."
The men stared at her.
"You owe me this," she said coldly.
"Lady, we don't owe you anything."
Her eyes narrowed.
"If you leave now, none of us gets paid."
The camera technician stepped back.
"You promised us half a million dollars."
"And you'll get it."
"Not if your fiancé catches us."
Another floorboard creaked upstairs.
A bedroom door opened.
Then came Ethan's voice again.
"Is someone down there?"
Silence.
The thieves held their breath.
Behind the corner, little Lily was shaking.
She didn't understand why the adults looked so scared.
She only knew one thing.
She had to find her mommy.
Very slowly, she backed away.
One tiny step.
Then another.
But Bunny Button slipped from her hand.
The stuffed rabbit fell onto the floor.
Thump.
The sound was soft.
But in the silence, it sounded like thunder.
Everyone turned.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
There, in the dim light, sat a little pink rabbit.
And beside it…
a tiny girl.
Lily.
For several seconds nobody moved.
The child looked at them with wide brown eyes.
One of the thieves cursed.
"There's a kid."
Vanessa's face turned ghostly white.
"Lily?"
The little girl blinked.
"Miss Vanessa?"
The woman hurried toward her.
"What are you doing awake?"
"I was thirsty."
Lily pointed at the men.
"Why are those people here?"
No one answered.
Lily looked confused.
"You said be quiet."
Vanessa knelt before her.
Her smile returned.
But it wasn't warm.
It looked... wrong.
"You had a dream, sweetheart."
The child frowned.
"No."
"Yes, you did."
"You opened the door."
The room went silent.
The thieves exchanged nervous looks.
Vanessa swallowed.
"You don't know what you're talking about."
Lily pointed again.
"You showed them where Daddy Ethan keeps things."
The camera technician cursed under his breath.
The little girl had heard everything.
Upstairs, another door opened.
"Eleanor?" Ethan called.
No answer.
Then his footsteps grew louder.
He was coming down.
Vanessa's heart pounded.
The thieves were trapped.
And now there was a witness.
A three-year-old witness.
The tallest man looked at Vanessa.
"What do we do?"
She didn't answer.
Instead, she stared at Lily.
The child suddenly felt cold.
Very cold.
Maria often said that children can sense danger before adults do.
At that moment, Lily sensed it.
She stepped backward.
Clutching Bunny Button.
Vanessa slowly stood.
Her face had changed completely.
No smile.
No kindness.
Only fear.
And something darker.
"If Ethan asks…" she said softly, "you didn't see anything tonight."
Lily shook her head.
"But I did."
Vanessa took another step.
"You were asleep."
"No."
"You were dreaming."
"No."
The woman smiled again.
This time it frightened Lily.
Then—
BANG!
A light turned on.
Everyone jumped.
At the top of the staircase stood Ethan Cole.
Wearing dark pajama pants.
One hand on the railing.
His face pale from sleep.
He looked down at the scene before him.
His fiancée.
Three strangers.
Little Lily.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Ethan frowned.
"What is going on?"
Vanessa spoke first.
"Thank goodness you're awake."
Her voice suddenly sounded sweet again.
One of the thieves looked shocked.
She was acting.
"These men broke in," she cried.
"I heard noises and came downstairs."
Ethan looked confused.
"What?"
Vanessa pointed dramatically.
"They threatened me."
The thieves stared at her in disbelief.
"You called us!" one of them shouted.
"Shut up!" she screamed.
Everything erupted at once.
The alarm blared.
The men shouted.
Ethan stepped down another stair.
"What is happening here?"
Then little Lily spoke.
Her tiny voice cut through the chaos.
"Miss Vanessa opened the door."
Silence.
The world seemed to stop.
Vanessa slowly turned toward the child.
Ethan looked at Lily.
"What did you say?"
"You were sleeping," she said softly.
"Miss Vanessa let them in."
Nobody moved.
Nobody even breathed.
Ethan's eyes shifted to his fiancée.
Vanessa forced a laugh.
"She's three years old."
Lily nodded seriously.
"And you pointed to your painting."
The color disappeared from Vanessa's face.
"You said there was a safe."
Ethan blinked.
Only three people knew about that safe.
Himself.
His lawyer.
And Vanessa.
The billionaire's expression slowly changed.
Confusion.
Shock.
Then disbelief.
"Vanessa..." he whispered.
She stepped backward.
"I can explain."
But before she could speak again—
The tallest thief laughed.
A long, bitter laugh.
"Oh, this is beautiful."
He looked directly at Ethan.
"Sir, if I were you…"
He pointed toward the library.
"...I'd check the room behind the bookshelf."
Ethan frowned.
"What room?"
The man smiled.
The smile sent chills through everyone.
"The secret room your father built."
Silence.
Ethan stared at him.
"My father never had a secret room."
The thief's smile widened.
"Oh yes, he did."
He looked at Vanessa.
"And your lovely fiancée knows exactly where it is."
Vanessa turned completely white.
Ethan's heartbeat thundered in his ears.
Because there was only one problem.
His father had died twenty years ago.
And almost no one alive knew anything about the old mansion.
So how could this stranger know about a hidden room…
May you like
that Ethan himself had never heard of?
