CHAPTER 4: "SHE'S YOUR SISTER" — THE CONFESSION THAT DESTROYED THE ENGAGEMENT

"...your father was."

The words hung in the air like thunder after a lightning strike.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Even little Lily seemed to understand that something terrible had just happened.

Ethan stared at Vanessa.

"No."

She lowered her eyes.

"No..." he said again, louder this time. "No. That's impossible."

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

"I wish it were."

The letter slipped from Ethan's hand and floated to the floor.

For a long moment, he simply looked at her.

The woman he had planned to marry.

The woman he had loved for almost two years.

The woman wearing his grandmother's engagement ring.

She couldn't be...

No.

His mind refused to accept it.

"You knew?" he whispered.

Vanessa nodded once.

A small, broken movement.

"You knew this entire time?"

Another nod.

The room exploded.

"You KNEW?" Ethan shouted.

The sound echoed through the hidden chamber.

Little Lily jumped and buried her face in Maria's leg.

Maria held her daughter tightly.

She had never seen Ethan angry.

Until now.

"Answer me!" he roared.

Vanessa looked up, tears streaming down her face.

"I found out when I was sixteen."

"And you still came into my life?"

"I didn't know who you were at first!"

"You expect me to believe that?"

"It's the truth!"

Ethan laughed bitterly.

A terrible sound.

"You moved to Charleston."

"Yes."

"You applied to work at my charity foundation."

"Yes."

"You somehow met me at a fundraiser."

"Yes."

"And after all that, I'm supposed to believe it was an accident?"

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"No."

Silence.

The answer hit harder than any lie.

"No?" Ethan repeated.

She shook her head.

"No. It wasn't an accident."

The room became perfectly still.

"I came looking for you."

Maria's hand flew to her mouth.

The tall thief slowly closed his eyes.

He already knew.

"You planned all of this?" Ethan whispered.

"At first... yes."

"Why?"

Vanessa looked at the old photograph in his hand.

"Because I hated your family."

Twenty-three years earlier...

A young woman named Claire Hartwell had fallen in love with Charles Cole.

Ethan's father.

Charles had promised to leave his wife.

He promised they would be together.

He promised to recognize the baby she was carrying.

He promised many things.

Then he broke every promise.

Claire gave birth to a little girl.

Vanessa.

And raised her alone.

Richard Hartwell, Claire's older brother, stepped in and pretended to be Vanessa's father to protect the family's reputation.

But bitterness poisoned the family.

Claire died when Vanessa was fifteen.

One month before her death, she told her daughter the truth.

"You have a brother," she whispered from her hospital bed.

"And one day... he'll inherit everything."

The words stayed with Vanessa.

For years.

She imagined Ethan as spoiled.

Cruel.

Arrogant.

The son who got everything.

While she and her mother had nothing.

So she came to Charleston.

To find him.

To hurt him.

"I wanted revenge," Vanessa said quietly.

The words struck Ethan like ice.

"So I got close to you."

He stared at her.

"But then something happened."

She looked directly at him.

"You weren't the man I expected."

Silence.

"You were kind."

Ethan said nothing.

"You listened to me."

His face remained cold.

"You remembered little things. You helped people when nobody was watching."

Maria's eyes filled with tears.

Because that part was true.

The Ethan Cole she knew was generous and gentle.

Vanessa's voice trembled.

"And then I made the worst mistake of my life."

She wiped away her tears.

"I fell in love with you."

Nobody spoke.

"I tried to leave," she whispered. "I tried so many times."

"Stop."

"But I couldn't."

"Stop talking."

"I hated myself every single day."

"STOP!"

The shout echoed through the room.

Vanessa fell silent.

Ethan's chest rose and fell rapidly.

Everything hurt.

Every memory.

Every smile.

Every kiss.

Every dream.

Destroyed in a single night.

Then he looked at her with tears in his eyes.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She broke completely.

"Because I loved you."

The answer was so simple.

And so tragic.

Suddenly—

Clap.

Clap.

Clap.

Everyone turned.

The tall thief was smiling.

"Beautiful."

Ethan glared at him.

"Not now."

"Oh, I think now is perfect."

The man stepped into the room.

"You've all been focused on the wrong secret."

Nobody understood.

He pointed at the letter.

"Read the last page."

"There is no last page."

The thief smiled.

"There is."

He lifted the black box.

Underneath it was another envelope.

Dust covered its surface.

No one had noticed it.

Ethan picked it up.

The handwriting was again his father's.

His hands trembled as he opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

He read the first sentence.

And his face changed.

"What?" Maria asked.

No answer.

"Ethan?"

He slowly looked up.

The color had drained from his face.

The paper slipped from his fingers.

Maria picked it up.

Then she gasped.

Because the letter said:

The child Claire carries may not be mine. Richard always believed Vanessa was his daughter, and I never had proof otherwise.

Silence.

Vanessa stared at the page.

"No."

Her voice cracked.

"No..."

She snatched the letter.

Read it again.

And again.

"No!"

Tears poured down her face.

"What is this?"

She looked at the tall thief.

"What is this?!"

The man didn't answer.

Because another voice did.

From the doorway.

A man's voice.

Deep.

Cold.

And familiar.

"It means your mother lied to everyone."

Everyone turned.

A figure stood in the hidden entrance.

Silver hair.

Expensive suit.

Sharp eyes.

And a face that made Vanessa go pale.

She whispered one word.

"...Uncle Daniel?"

The man stepped into the room.

"No, Vanessa."

A chilling smile crossed his face.

"Not your uncle."

He looked at Ethan.

Then at the photograph.

Then back at Vanessa.

"I think it's time everyone learned who your real father is."

Silence.

The man's smile widened.

May you like

Because the answer he carried would be even more shocking than the one they had just discovered.
