Chapter 4 - The New FoundationTwo weeks later, the Harrington mansion was in an uproar.

Stella had threatened to cut Daniel out of the family trust; Raymond had quietly looked at his wife, told her she had crossed a line for the last time, and signed the company transfer papers early; and Diane had locked herself in her room because nobody cared about her designer handbags anymore.

In a sunlit penthouse overlooking the Manhattan skyline, Ivy sat at a sleek oak table, wrapped in a warm cashmere sweater, holding a steaming cup of tea.

The front door opened, and Daniel walked in, shaking the light autumn rain from his jacket. He dropped a set of keys onto the counter and smiled.

“How’s the knee?” Daniel asked, pulling out the chair beside her.

“Healing,” Ivy smiled softly, tracing the rim of her mug. “Though I still can't believe you bought out my employment contract just to fire me and rehire me as your personal consultant.”

“It’s not consulting,” Daniel corrected, taking her hand in his. “It’s a permanent arrangement. And besides, someone has to make sure I don't run over any more pedestrians at crosswalks.”

Ivy laughed—a bright, genuine sound that echoed through the empty rooms.

She wasn't a maid anymore. She wasn't invisible. And as she looked into Daniel’s eyes, she knew she would never go hungry—or feel homeless—ever again.
