Chapter 1 - THE SHADOW OF THE KINGPINThe marble floor of the Sovereign lobby felt like ice beneath Rosie’s knees, but she didn’t move. Eighty pounds of broken, shivering mastiff pressed against her chest, soaking her ruined white dress in warm, metallic-smelling blood.

Monica Hail stood ten feet away, her breath coming in sharp, outraged gasps, her manicured finger still pointing accusingly. "I am calling Mr. Cross right now!" she shrilled, tapping frantically at her desk phone. "That animal is bleeding on imported Italian tile! You two don't belong in a five-star hotel. You belong in a shelter!"
Lena Carver stood firm between Monica and the child, her housekeeper’s uniform stained with industrial cleaner, her chin lifted with quiet defiance. "She’s a child, Monica. And the dog is dying. Have you lost whatever soul you were born with?"
"My soul is fine, Lena. It’s my job performance review I'm worried about, which is going to tank because of this feral rat and her beast!" Monica slammed the receiver down, her face flushed with righteous fury. "Mr. Cross is on his way down. And as for you, Lena? Hand me your keys. You're finished here."
Before Lena could speak, a low, rhythmic sound echoed from the far end of the sprawling hall—the distinct click of heavy leather dress shoes against stone.
It wasn't the hurried step of a hotel manager or the heavy tread of a security guard. It was a cadence that commanded absolute, terrified obedience. Every bellboy, concierge, and guest who had been pretending to look away suddenly froze, their spines stiffening as if struck by an invisible current.
Out from the private mahogany-paneled elevator corridor stepped Ezra Valente.
He wore a tailored charcoal suit that cost more than Lena’s yearly earnings. Silver threaded through his dark hair at the temples, and his cold, slate-grey eyes carried the weight of an empire built on blood, loyalty, and absolute control. Behind him stood three massive men in identical suits—his personal shadow detail.

Ezra’s gaze swept across the lobby, taking in the spilled coffee, the trembling bellboy, Monica’s smug expression, Lena’s protective stance, and finally... the small, blood-stained girl holding a dying mastiff in the center of the room.
The air in the lobby seemed to drop twenty degrees.
