Chapter 7 - THE REBUILDINGBack on land, the corporate world was moving fast.

With Nathaniel’s fraudulent enterprise dissolved, Veridian Capital restructured its board, inviting my family trust to take a controlling stake in their regional infrastructure portfolio.

Arthur Vance personally requested a meeting to apologize for being taken in by Nathaniel’s polished charisma.

"I misjudged you, Emma," Arthur admitted across my father’s old mahogany desk in the financial district. "I thought you were just another wealthy socialite caught in a messy marital dispute."

"Most people make that mistake, Arthur," I replied, signing the partnership agreement with a steady hand. "Usually right before they lose everything."

Arthur laughed—a genuine, nervous sound—and signed his copy. "Well, I can assure you, Veridian will never make that mistake again. Your portfolio management is clinical. Cold, brilliant, and untouchable."

"It's not cold," I corrected softly, looking up at him. "It's just protected."

When Arthur left, I leaned back in my leather chair, looking at the city skyline outside the window.

For years, I had allowed myself to live in the shadow of a man who measured his self-worth by how small he could make me feel. I had played the quiet, supportive wife while he built a hollow empire out of borrowed money and stolen trust.

Now, the illusion was gone. There was only reality. And reality belonged to me.
