Chapter 5 - The Live Stream AmbushExposing the Empire on National TelevisionThirty minutes later, the grand ballroom of the Grand Regency Hotel was packed with over two hundred journalists, news crews, and political supporters. Senator Vance was holding his televised campaign gala, basking in the spotlight, using my tragedy as a stepping stone to solidify his image as a crusader against financial corruption.

On the main stage, Vance was delivering a passionate speech. Behind him stood his wife, his campaign managers, and—standing in the shadows near the backstage curtain—Evelyn Fletcher, wearing a sleek black dress, pretending to be a grieving grandmother supported by the Senator’s charity foundation.

They thought they had won.

They thought I was cowering in a police station or weeping over two white coffins.

Suddenly, the massive LED screens behind the podium—which were supposed to display Vance’s campaign slogan—flickered.

BZZZZT!

The cheerful blue campaign graphics disappeared. In their place, a high-definition video feed lit up the entire room.

It was the interrogation footage recorded just forty-five minutes ago.

Silas’s voice boomed through the ballroom’s surrounding surround-sound speakers, echoing with terrifying clarity:

"I didn't cut the lines! It was Vance’s mechanic! A guy named Miller who works out of the docks! Vance said if I didn't get the land, he’d kill all of us!"

The entire ballroom went dead silent.

Reporters gasped. Cameras pivoted frantically from the LED screens back to Senator Vance on stage.

Vance’s face went entirely white. He froze, his mouth half-open, looking at the screen in pure horror. "Cut the power! Turn off those screens right now!" he barked at the stage tech crew.

But the tech crew couldn't stop it.

Agent Kane’s cyber-crimes unit had taken complete remote control of the venue's audio-visual network, broadcasting the feed not only to the ballroom, but hijacking the local news broadcast network feed in real-time.

Before Vance could flee the stage, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom burst open.

I stepped through the doorway.

I was no longer wearing the rain-soaked funeral dress. I wore a sharp, tailored black suit. Behind me marched Agent Kane, a dozen heavily armed FBI agents, and Detective Miller with state troopers.

The press erupted into a frenzy of flashing camera bulbs and shouting reporters.

"Clara Fletcher! Is that true?"

"Senator Vance, did you order the hit on the SUV?"

"Mrs. Fletcher, look over here!"

I walked down the central red carpet, my heels clicking loudly against the marble floor, my eyes locked on Senator Vance.

"Senator Vance!" I called out, my voice amplified by the microphone in my hand, connected to the house speakers. "You claimed thirty minutes ago that I was an unstable mother who stole money from my own children. But these records—"

I raised a thick stack of printed banking documents high above my head so every camera in the room could see them.

"—these records show twenty-four direct shell-company payments from your campaign fund to Silas Fletcher, signed by your personal campaign treasurer, paying him to liquidate my children’s land trust!"

"This is a circus! This woman is insane!" Vance screamed into his podium microphone, his voice cracking with desperation. "Security! Escort her out of here!"

Security guards took two steps toward me, but FBI agents immediately unholstered their badges and sidearms, cutting them off. "FBI! Nobody moves!" Agent Kane shouted.

I reached the front of the stage, stepping right up to the podium.

Evelyn, standing behind Vance, tried to slip quietly toward the backstage fire exit.

"Don't run, Evelyn," I said into the microphone, pointing directly at her. "The police already raided the guesthouse. They retrieved the charred remnants of the safe, and they found your fingerprints on the Zippo lighter you dropped while trying to burn me alive."

Evelyn stopped dead in her tracks. Two female FBI officers stepped onto the stage and snapped handcuffs onto her wrists right in front of twenty live news cameras.

"You miserable bitch..." Evelyn spat, thrashing against the officers as she was dragged away.

I turned back to Vance. He was sweating profusely, his expensive suit soaked with nervous perspiration.

"You thought you could destroy my family, murder my children, and steal our legacy for a land deal," I said, my voice cold, steady, and loud enough for millions of viewers watching the live stream at home to hear. "You thought because you had power, money, and political connections, a grieving mother couldn't touch you."

I reached into my coat, pulled out an official Federal Arrest Warrant, and slapped it onto the podium directly over his speech notes.

"Senator Raymond Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit first-degree capital murder."

Agent Kane stepped up, grabbed Vance by the shoulder, and pulled his hands behind his back.

As the handcuffs clicked shut on the most powerful man in the state, the ballroom exploded into utter chaos. News reporters were shouting live updates into their phones, camera flashes lit up the room like lightning, and Vance was led away in shame, ducking his head to avoid the light.

I stood on that stage alone, surrounded by the flashing cameras.

Justice had begun. But as I looked down at my phone vibrating in my hand, a new, restricted text message appeared on the screen from a hidden number:

“You got Vance and Silas, Clara. But you still don't know who bought the poison that really killed your kids. Check the coroner's report again.”

My heart stopped.

The coroner's report?
