Chapter 6 - The Brother’s Betrayal

"Of course I did, little brother," Dante sighed, walking casually to the side of the bed and looking down at the most feared crime boss in Chicago as if he were inspecting a broken toy. "You thought you could lock me away in Europe, strip me of my shares in the port authority, and run the city like your own personal kingdom? Empires built on blood always demand a sacrifice. And tonight, the blood debt comes due."

"You poisoned him," I said, my voice shaking with a rage that completely eclipsed my fear. I stood up slowly, stepping between Dante and Alexander, refusing to back down. "You had Elena switch the prescription. You wanted him to die slowly, agonizingly, so it looked like natural heart failure."

Dante stopped, tilting his head as he looked down at me with genuine curiosity.

"And who might you be, little bird?" Dante asked, his voice dripping with condescension. "A housemaid with a martyr complex. Tell me, did you really think your little heroics with the pill bottle were going to save him?"

"I know it was a three-milligram dose," I fired back, holding my ground. "And I know that if I hand this bottle to the federal authorities currently investigating the Romano estate, every single man in this room—including you—goes away for life."

The room went deathly silent.

Even Dante’s enforcers shifted uneasily. Marcus stared at me, his eyes wide with a mix of horror and sudden, fierce respect.

Dante’s smile slowly faded, replaced by a cold, calculating mask. He raised his hand slowly, signaling his guards.

"Impressive," Dante whispered. "Truly impressive. You have more spine than half my captains. Which is precisely why you won't live to see dawn."

Before Dante could snap his fingers to order my execution, Marcus moved with blinding, catastrophic speed.

Instead of aiming his gun at Dante, Marcus spun around and fired two shots directly into the electrical fuse box embedded in the hallway wall just outside the door.

SPARK! BANG-BANG!

A blinding shower of blue-white electrical sparks erupted across the ceiling as the entire emergency generator blew out, plunging the entire mansion into pitch-black, suffocating darkness.

"Grab him and run!" Marcus yelled out in the dark, grabbing my arm with iron force.
