Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING AT THE FIRMForty-eight hours later, the executive boardroom on the 42nd floor of Mercer Global in Manhattan buzzed with tense, suffocating energy.

The mahogany double doors swung open, and Daniel Mercer walked in. He wore a crisp, tailored charcoal suit, his posture impeccably straight, his expression an unreadable mask of absolute authority. Behind him walked two senior corporate attorneys carrying thick leather briefcases.
Sitting at the far end of the massive glass conference table were three remaining board members, looking pale and shaken. They had spent the last two days reviewing the federal indictment notices, asset-freezing orders, and the forensic digital audit logs delivered directly by the FBI.
“Daniel,” the senior board member, Arthur Pendelton, cleared his throat nervously, standing up to greet him. “We... we received the preliminary disclosures from federal prosecutors this morning. The board had no knowledge of Marcus Vance’s clandestine operations with—with your wife.”
Daniel didn't take a seat immediately. He walked to the floor-to-ceiling glass window, looking out over the sprawling Manhattan skyline as the morning sun broke through the clouds.
“I know you didn't, Arthur,” Daniel said smoothly, turning around to face them. “If you had, your names would be on the federal indictments right alongside Marcus and Claire.”
Arthur swallowed hard, sinking back into his leather chair. “What... what happens to Marcus’s shares? And the residential trust?”
“Marcus’s shares have been seized under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, pending federal forfeiture,” Daniel replied, stepping toward the table and placing both hands flat on the polished glass surface. “As for the residential trust and the corporate restructuring Claire tried to legally manipulate—my legal team has already voided the fraudulent power of attorney documents under duress and coercion clauses.”
One of the junior board members raised a trembling hand. “And Claire? Where is she now?”
“She is currently being held at a federal detention facility without bail, awaiting arraignment on multiple felony counts of child endangerment, conspiracy, and physical assault,” Daniel answered without a single ounce of emotion in his voice. “Her defense attorneys tried to file for a psychiatric evaluation, but the medical logs from the nursery cameras and the corroborating statements from our household staff dismantled that defense before it even reached the judge’s desk.”
Silence descended upon the boardroom. No one dared to question him. The man standing before them was no longer just a brilliant tech executive; he was a cold, calculating protector who had systematically dismantled an entire conspiracy in less than forty-eight hours.
“Effective immediately,” Daniel commanded, his voice ringing crisp and clear through the room, “I am reclaiming sole voting control of the executive board. Marcus Vance is permanently stripped of his title, his office, and his stock options. The company will issue a formal press release by noon stating that Mercer Global is cooperating fully with federal authorities to purge all corrupt elements from its ranks.”
Arthur Pendelton nodded frantically. “Yes, Daniel. Absolutely. Whatever you need.”
“Good,” Daniel said, turning on his heel. “My attorneys will handle the paperwork. I have somewhere else I need to be.”
Without waiting for a response, Daniel walked out of the boardroom, leaving the executives behind him in absolute awe.
He didn't go back to his office. Instead, he headed straight down to the executive parking garage, slid into the driver’s seat of his black SUV, and pressed the button on his car phone to place a direct call.

The phone rang twice before a soft, hesitant voice answered on the other end.
“Hello? Mr. Mercer?”
