CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET IN THE ATTIC

The Dying Grandmother's Terror Unlocks a Decades-Old Conspiracy

Richard’s heart hammered against his ribs as he drove his sleek Audi through the rain-slicked streets of Portland. Beside him in the passenger seat, Emma was fast asleep, clutching her gold box of chocolates like it was a sacred relic. Her small, angelic face was peaceful, a stark contrast to the storm raging inside Richard’s mind.

Julian’s daughter?

It was impossible. Julian, Richard’s beloved younger brother, had died in a horrific apartment fire seven years ago. The tragedy had shattered the Maxwell family, turning Richard’s father, Charles, into an even more ruthless tyrant and driving Richard away from the family mansion into a life of solitary work. Julian had been the black sheep, a passionate artist who rejected the family’s corporate greed. He had disappeared for months before his death, rumored to be living in poverty with a woman the family deemed "unworthy."

Could Emma be Julian’s child? The timeline fit perfectly. Emma was seven. Julian died seven years ago.

Richard pulled up to the curb of the small, dilapidated blue house. The paint was peeling like sunburned skin, and the front porch sagged dangerously to one side. This was where Emma lived.

Gently lifting the sleeping girl in his arms, Richard carried her up the creaking steps. He pushed the unlocked front door open and was instantly met with the heavy, clinical smell of rubbing alcohol, old paper, and cheap heaters.

"Emma? Is that you, sweetheart?" a weak, raspy voice called out from the dark living room.

Richard walked in. On a worn-out sofa covered in thin blankets lay Martha Jenkins. Her skin was translucent, her breathing shallow and rattled. But the moment her fading eyes adjusted to the light and landed on Richard’s face, her entire body went rigid.

She let out a sharp, terrified gasp, her hands flying to her chest.

"You..." Martha whimpered, her eyes wide with absolute horror. "No... please... don't take her. You promised you would leave us alone! We took no money! We asked for nothing!"

Richard quickly placed Emma on a nearby armchair, draping his expensive wool coat over her to keep her warm. He then knelt beside Martha’s sofa, his hands raised in a peaceful gesture.

"Calm down, please," Richard said softly. "I’m not here to hurt you. I’m Richard. Richard Maxwell. I’m the man Emma asked to pretend to be her father today."

Martha’s chest heaved as she stared at him, searching his face. "Richard..." she whispered, her voice trembling. "The older brother. The one Julian said was different. The one who didn't have stone in his chest."

Richard’s breath hitched. "You knew Julian?"

Tears began to stream down Martha’s wrinkled cheeks. She reached out with a trembling, arthritic hand and clutched Richard’s sleeve. "Julian loved my daughter, Sarah. They were married in secret. When Sarah got pregnant, your father... Charles Maxwell... found out. He threatened to ruin my daughter’s life. He threatened to lock Julian away."

She paused, coughing violently into a blood-stained tissue. Richard quickly handed her a glass of water from the nightstand, his heart aching with a mixture of rage and sorrow.

"Julian refused to leave her," Martha continued, her voice cracking. "So, Charles... he arranged it. The fire. They said it was a faulty heater in Julian’s studio. But Julian called Sarah twenty minutes before the fire started. He said he had proof that Charles was laundering money through his development projects. He said he was coming home to take Sarah and the baby and run."

Martha grabbed Richard’s collar, pulling him closer with surprising strength.

"He never made it home, Richard! The building burned to the ground. And three days later, Sarah went into premature labor. She gave birth to Emma, and her heart just... gave out. She died in my arms. Your father’s lawyers came to the hospital. They told me if I ever revealed Emma’s true identity, they would make sure I was declared unfit, and they would put Emma in an orphanage where I would never see her again. So I hid her. I changed her last name to Taylor. My maiden name."

Richard felt as if the room was spinning. His brother hadn't died in an accident. He had been murdered by their own father to protect a corporate empire. And Emma—the sweet, brave little girl who had begged him for just one hour of love—was his actual niece. The rightful heir to half of the Maxwell fortune.

Suddenly, the front door was kicked open.

Three men in dark suits stepped into the small living room. At the center stood Vance, holding a thick manila folder and a sneer on his face.

"A very touching family reunion," Vance said, stepping inside and shaking the rain from his umbrella onto the worn hardwood floor. "But unfortunately, it’s time to wrap this little drama up."

Vance tossed the folder onto the coffee table.

"Martha Jenkins, you are in violation of the non-disclosure agreement you signed seven years ago. Furthermore, this property has just been acquired by Maxwell Enterprises. You have exactly twenty-four hours to vacate the premises. As for the child..." Vance looked over at Emma, who was beginning to stir under Richard’s coat. "...she will be placed in state custody by tomorrow morning."
