CHAPTER 4 — "The Old Billionaire Fell to His Knees Before the Receptionist... and Roberto Finally Realized Everything Had Been a Lie"

The old man arrived at the Mirador Imperial Hotel before sunrise.

He didn't come with reporters.

He didn't bring lawyers.

He came with only one leather briefcase that looked older than most of the hotel's employees.

His name was Don Esteban Sandoval.

To the outside world, he was the retired founder of the Sandoval Hospitality Group.

To Roberto...

He was the uncle who had raised him after his parents died.

To Camila...

He was the last person she had expected to see again.

The lobby was unusually quiet.

Camila was arranging fresh lilies at the reception desk when the revolving door slowly turned.

The moment she saw the elderly gentleman, her hands froze.

For nearly ten seconds, neither of them spoke.

Then Don Esteban smiled sadly.

"You still recognize me."

Camila lowered her head respectfully.

"Good morning, Don Esteban."

The elderly man walked toward the desk with slow, deliberate steps.

"I've been looking for you for four years."

"I know."

"You knew?"

She nodded.

"I received your letters."

"Then... why didn't you answer?"

Camila remained silent.

How could she explain that every letter had arrived during the darkest period of her life?

While she was selling furniture to pay hospital bills.

While she was sleeping beside her mother's hospital bed.

While she was arranging two funerals only months apart.

Some grief leaves no room for conversation.

Don Esteban seemed to understand.

He whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Three simple words.

The first sincere apology Camila had heard in years.

At that exact moment, Roberto stepped out of the elevator.

He stopped instantly.

His uncle...

Standing in front of his receptionist?

"Uncle Esteban?"

The old man turned.

"I've been waiting for this conversation."

Roberto approached, confused.

"You know Camila?"

Before Esteban could answer, another voice echoed through the lobby.

"So this is where you've been."

Valeria.

She had arrived unexpectedly once again.

The moment she saw her husband standing beside Camila, jealousy flashed across her face.

Then she noticed the elderly man.

Her expression softened instantly.

"Uncle Esteban."

She kissed his cheek politely.

"What a pleasant surprise."

He didn't return the smile.

Instead, he looked at her with an expression she had never seen before.

Disappointment.

"I'd like all three of us to sit down," Esteban said calmly.

"No," Valeria replied.

"I have a board meeting."

"You'll cancel it."

His tone left no room for argument.

Twenty minutes later, they sat inside Roberto's private conference room.

Rain continued falling outside.

No one touched the coffee.

The silence felt unbearable.

Finally, Esteban opened his worn leather briefcase.

Inside lay dozens of yellowed documents.

Photographs.

Old letters.

A leather-bound journal.

He gently placed a black-and-white photograph on the table.

It showed two young men standing proudly in front of the very first Sandoval hotel.

One was Esteban.

The other...

Roberto immediately recognized.

"Uncle Alejandro..."

The professor.

The uncle who had died years earlier.

The same man whose name Camila had never explained.

"You knew my uncle?"

Roberto asked quietly.

Camila answered before Esteban could.

"He was my doctoral advisor."

Roberto looked stunned.

"My uncle never mentioned you."

"He wasn't allowed to."

The room became silent again.

Valeria folded her arms impatiently.

"I don't understand what any of this has to do with a hotel receptionist."

Esteban slowly turned toward her.

"It has everything to do with her."

He picked up another document.

"Twenty-six years ago, Alejandro discovered financial irregularities inside our company."

Roberto frowned.

"What irregularities?"

"Millions of dollars disappearing."

Roberto looked shocked.

"That can't be true."

"It is."

Esteban pushed another folder across the table.

"For years someone had been stealing from Sandoval Hospitality."

"Your uncle investigated it in secret."

"He trusted almost no one."

Valeria forced a laugh.

"So?"

"So..."

Esteban looked directly at Camila.

"He asked the smartest student he had ever taught to help him analyze thousands of financial records."

Roberto slowly turned toward Camila.

"You?"

She nodded quietly.

"I was completing my doctoral research in forensic linguistics."

"I also specialized in authorship analysis and financial document examination."

Roberto stared at her.

"You investigated our company?"

"Only privately."

"And what did you find?"

Camila hesitated.

Then answered.

"Evidence."

"What kind of evidence?"

"The kind that could destroy an entire family."

Valeria suddenly stood up.

"This is ridiculous."

"I'm leaving."

Esteban's voice stopped her before she reached the door.

"Sit down."

She turned slowly.

"Excuse me?"

"I said..."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"Sit down."

For the first time since marrying Roberto...

Valeria obeyed.

Esteban opened the leather journal.

"The investigation ended suddenly."

"Because Alejandro suffered a fatal heart attack."

Camila quietly closed her eyes.

She still remembered that phone call.

She had flown to Mexico City for the funeral.

She had cried beside the coffin of the man who had believed in her when no one else had.

After the service, the family attorney had handed her the sealed envelope.

She had never forgotten his words.

"Professor Sandoval said you'll know when the right time comes."

Roberto leaned forward.

"Are you telling me my uncle suspected someone in the family?"

"Not suspected."

Esteban answered.

"He proved it."

Silence.

"Then why wasn't anyone arrested?"

"Because the final evidence disappeared the day after his funeral."

Roberto looked at Camila.

"The envelope..."

She nodded.

"Contained his final testimony."

"And the name?"

"Yes."

"The name of the person who stole from your family."

Valeria's fingers tightened around her chair.

"So where is this miraculous letter?"

Camila calmly met her eyes.

"Safe."

"You expect us to believe that?"

"I don't need you to believe me."

Valeria laughed nervously.

"Maybe there never was a letter."

"There was."

"Then show it."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because..."

Camila's voice remained calm.

"...I promised Professor Alejandro that I would only deliver it when I was absolutely certain Roberto was ready to hear the truth."

Roberto whispered,

"And am I?"

Camila looked at him for several long seconds.

Then quietly answered,

"I don't know."

Those four words hurt more than any accusation.

Just then, Roberto's phone rang.

It was the company's Chief Financial Officer.

His voice sounded panicked.

"Mr. Sandoval..."

"What happened?"

"Our central accounting servers..."

"Yes?"

"They've been hacked."

Roberto stood instantly.

"How bad?"

"Someone accessed financial records going back almost twenty-five years."

His heart skipped a beat.

"What was taken?"

There was a long silence.

Then the CFO whispered,

"Only one folder."

"What folder?"

"The archive labeled..."

Paper rustled on the other end of the line.

"...Project Athena."

Camila's face lost all color.

She whispered almost to herself,

"No..."

Esteban heard her.

"What is Project Athena?"

Camila slowly closed her eyes.

"It was the codename..."

"...Professor Alejandro used for the investigation."

The room fell silent.

Whoever had hacked the company's servers wasn't looking for money.

They were looking for the exact same secret hidden inside the letter.

Which meant only one thing.

Someone inside the Sandoval empire had known about Alejandro's investigation all along.

May you like

And they had just made their first move.

End of Chapter 4...
