CHAPTER 5 — "The Secret Was Never About the Money... It Was About Roberto's Real Father"

The conference room remained silent long after the phone call ended.

Outside, the rain had finally stopped.

Inside, every heartbeat seemed deafening.

Roberto slowly lowered his phone.

"Project Athena..."

He looked at Camila.

"You knew that name."

She nodded.

"I hoped I would never hear it again."

Valeria crossed her arms.

"So now we're supposed to believe in secret investigations, mysterious envelopes, and hackers?"

Camila didn't answer.

Don Esteban did.

"You should be praying she's telling the truth."

Valeria forced a laugh.

"I'm not afraid of fairy tales."

The old man's eyes hardened.

"Then you're a fool."

Thirty minutes later, Roberto ordered every executive meeting canceled.

For the first time in years, the president of Sandoval Hospitality ignored investors, shareholders, and the press.

There was only one thing that mattered now.

Finding the truth.

He escorted Camila and Don Esteban to the hotel's private archive room, a secure office used to store decades of company records.

Only four people had biometric access.

Roberto.

The Chief Financial Officer.

The company's legal director.

And...

Valeria.

Roberto looked at the security log.

His face slowly drained of color.

"There was another access last night."

Don Esteban stepped closer.

"At what time?"

"2:17 a.m."

"Who entered?"

Roberto hesitated.

The screen displayed only one name.

VALERIA MONTALVO SANDOVAL

The room fell silent.

Valeria immediately shook her head.

"That's impossible."

"The system must be wrong."

"You were at home."

"I was."

Roberto stared at the screen.

"It says your fingerprint opened the archive."

"My fingerprint can be copied."

"Not this system."

She took a step backward.

"I've never even been in this room."

Camila quietly observed the exchange.

Something didn't feel right.

Valeria was frightened...

But not in the way a guilty person usually was.

She looked...

Confused.

Camila walked toward the biometric scanner.

"May I?"

Roberto nodded.

She carefully examined the device without touching it.

After nearly a minute, she smiled faintly.

"It's been replaced."

Roberto frowned.

"What?"

"This scanner isn't the original."

He looked closer.

At first glance, it seemed identical.

Then he noticed a tiny scratch near the lower corner.

One that hadn't been there before.

Camila continued calmly.

"Someone swapped the hardware."

"The access records can't be trusted anymore."

Roberto looked stunned.

"You can tell that just by looking?"

"I spent years studying document authentication."

"The same principles apply."

Don Esteban whispered,

"So whoever planned this..."

"...prepared everything in advance."

Meanwhile...

Forty kilometers away, inside an abandoned vineyard, Marco Ruiz placed the fake envelope onto a wooden table.

Across from him sat the mysterious elderly man from the penthouse.

The man's silver hair was perfectly combed.

His expensive watch reflected the dim light.

He never introduced himself.

Marco didn't dare ask his name.

"I brought it."

The old man slowly broke the wax seal.

He unfolded the letter.

His expression changed instantly.

Blank pages.

Nothing.

Only one handwritten sentence remained.

"Some truths belong only to those worthy of them."

The old man's hand trembled.

"Damn her..."

He crushed the paper in his fist.

"She knew."

Marco swallowed nervously.

"What now?"

The old man smiled.

"A woman like Camila doesn't hide evidence in a safe."

"She hides it..."

"...inside people."

Back at the hotel...

Camila asked Roberto an unexpected question.

"May I see a photograph of your parents?"

Roberto looked confused.

"My parents?"

"Please."

He opened his wallet.

Inside was an old family photograph.

A young couple stood beside a little boy.

Roberto.

Camila studied the picture for almost a full minute.

Then she looked toward Don Esteban.

"May I see Professor Alejandro's photograph again?"

The old man handed it over.

Camila placed both pictures side by side.

She remained silent.

Roberto frowned.

"What are you seeing?"

She hesitated.

"I may be mistaken."

"What is it?"

She slowly pushed the photographs toward him.

"Look at your father's ears."

Roberto blinked.

"What?"

"Now look at Professor Alejandro."

Silence.

The shape.

The angle.

The distinctive fold along the upper cartilage.

Nearly identical.

Roberto laughed awkwardly.

"They were brothers."

"That explains it."

Camila didn't smile.

"No."

"It doesn't."

She looked at the childhood photograph again.

"Your legal father had attached earlobes."

"Professor Alejandro had detached earlobes."

"So do you."

Roberto stared at her.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying genetics don't always tell the story people expect."

Valeria stood abruptly.

"This has gone too far."

"You're insulting Roberto's family."

Camila remained calm.

"I'm stating observable facts."

Don Esteban suddenly closed his eyes.

His breathing became uneven.

"No..."

he whispered.

"It can't be..."

Everyone turned toward him.

He looked as though twenty years had disappeared from his face.

Slowly...

Painfully...

He sat down.

"There was..."

His voice cracked.

"There was a rumor."

Roberto frowned.

"What rumor?"

"My brother Alejandro..."

He swallowed hard.

"...was deeply in love with your mother before she married my older brother."

The room froze.

"No one ever proved anything."

"It was buried."

"Our father forbade anyone from speaking about it again."

Roberto felt the floor disappear beneath him.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying..."

Don Esteban could barely breathe.

"...there were whispers that your mother ended the wrong engagement."

No one spoke.

The silence felt unbearable.

Finally Roberto turned toward Camila.

"The letter..."

"It wasn't about stolen money."

She lowered her eyes.

"No."

"It was bigger."

"Much bigger."

He whispered,

"What's inside it?"

Camila looked directly at him.

"For years I believed the letter existed only to expose financial crimes."

She paused.

"But after rereading Professor Alejandro's research notes..."

"I realized something."

"What?"

She took a slow breath.

"He wasn't trying to protect the company's fortune."

"He was trying to protect..."

She couldn't finish.

Roberto's voice was barely audible.

"Protect what?"

Camila met his eyes.

"Your identity."

The room became deathly silent.

Before anyone could react, Roberto's phone rang again.

It was the hospital.

"Mr. Sandoval?"

"Yes?"

"This is San Gabriel Medical Center."

"What happened?"

"An elderly gentleman was brought in after collapsing outside your hotel."

Roberto looked at Don Esteban.

He was sitting right there.

"Who?"

The nurse answered,

"He identified himself before losing consciousness."

Roberto's face turned white.

"The patient said..."

"...his name is Alejandro Sandoval."

The phone slipped from Roberto's hand.

Everyone stared in disbelief.

Professor Alejandro Sandoval...

The man whose funeral they had all attended four years earlier...

Had just been admitted to the hospital.

May you like

Alive.
