Chapter 4 - The House of LiesOMG

By eight o'clock the following morning, the sun rose over a warzone.
The federal agents had temporarily suspended their raid after Dante’s legal team filed an emergency injunction, but the damage was irreversible. Three major shipping syndicates had canceled their contracts with Morelli Logistics overnight. The news was running round-the-clock coverage of the scandal, and political figures were publicly distancing themselves from both Dante Morelli and the Sterling family.
Inside the estate's grand drawing room, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Dante sat in a leather armchair, his face shadowed by dark stubble, his eyes bloodshot and terrifying. Sitting across from him was Vanessa Sterling, along with her father, District Judge Richard Sterling—a powerful, white-haired man in an expensive wool suit who looked furious.
"This is an outrage, Dante!" Judge Sterling barked, slamming his fist onto the coffee table. "My daughter’s name is being dragged through the mud because your security team can't keep their ledgers clean! The authorities are sniffing around my political action committees!"
Vanessa sat beside her father, her eyes red from crying, her manicured nails digging into her designer handbag. "Dante, you have to do something! The media is calling me a mob mistress! And those... those disgusting servants in the kitchen are refusing to cook for me! Mrs. Carter told me to my face to make my own breakfast!"
Dante slowly raised his head. His eyes locked onto Vanessa with a lethal, predatory stillness that made her voice instantly cut off.
"Where were you yesterday at three o'clock, Vanessa?" Dante asked softly.
Vanessa blinked, startled. "What? I was... I was here! Planning our rehearsal dinner!"
Dante reached into his suit jacket, pulled out a thick Manila envelope—the contents retrieved from Safety Deposit Box 408 three hours ago—and dumped it onto the glass table.
Dozens of bank statements, wire transfers, and encrypted communications spilled out across the surface.
Judge Sterling’s face instantly lost every drop of color. He froze, his hand trembling over the papers.
"What... what is this?" Vanessa stammered, picking up a document.
"That," Dante said, his voice dropping into a register that chilled the blood in the room, "is the proof that your father cleared the federal wiretaps on my father’s house ten years ago—just hours before the rival families moved in to murder him."
Vanessa gasped, looking at her father. "Dad... what is he talking about?"
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Sterling snapped, his composure completely shattering. He turned to Dante, his jaw working furiously. "Dante, listen to me. That's ancient history! That was business between your father and the old establishment! We gave you political immunity for a decade!"
"You didn't give me immunity," Dante said, standing up slowly. His massive frame seemed to swallow the light in the room. "You put a leash on me. You brought your daughter into my home to make sure that when the federal hammer finally dropped, my shipping assets would transfer directly into your holding companies."
"Dante, no! I love you!" Vanessa shrieked, jumping up and reaching for his arm. "I didn't know anything about my father's old deals! I promise you, I'm loyal to you!"
Dante looked down at her hand on his arm. His expression was utterly empty.
"You brought silver scissors into my house," Dante said quietly. "You humiliated a woman who gave four years of her life to shield this estate from your father’s parasites. You thought she was nothing because she wore an apron and served your tea."
He leaned down until his face was inches from Vanessa’s terrified eyes.
"Ivy Bennett knew about your father’s treason two years ago. She held the key that could have destroyed your family instantly. Do you know why she didn't use it?"
Vanessa shook her head, tears streaming down her face. "W-why?"
"Because she was waiting for me to prove that I was a leader worth protecting," Dante whispered. "And instead, I let you cut her hair."
Dante pulled his arm away from her touch so hard she stumbled backward onto the sofa.
He looked at Marcus, who was standing by the double doors with six heavily armed men—men whose loyalty belonged to Dante, not the law.
"Take Judge Sterling and his daughter off my property," Dante ordered. "If either of them sets foot in Rhode Island again, file the rest of these documents directly with the Special Prosecutor in Washington."
"Dante! You can't do this to us! You need my political power!" Judge Sterling screamed as Marcus’s men grabbed his arms, dragging him toward the door.
"Get your hands off me! Dante!" Vanessa shrieked, kicking and clawing as she was hauled out of the drawing room. "I'm your fiancée! You can't throw me out for a fat, pathetic maid!"
The heavy doors slammed shut, cutting off her screams.
Silence returned to the mansion, but it was not a peaceful silence. It was the silence of a tomb.
Dante turned toward the window, looking out over the misty ocean cliffs. His empire was severely damaged. His allies were fleeing. The federal government was knocking at his door.

He picked up his phone and dialed a private investigator.
"Find her," Dante commanded into the receiver. "Find Ivy Bennett. I don't care if she's crossed the country or left the continent. Find her."
