Chapter 4 - The Arrest and the Audit

The chaotic blur of federal agents swarming the 45th-floor boardroom felt like watching a movie where I was both the lead actress and the director.

"Conrad Sterling, put your hands behind your back!" a Special Agent shouted, grabbing Conrad by his tailored shoulders and shoving him facedown against the mahogany conference table. The expensive crystal scotch glass he had been holding rolled off the edge, shattering into a thousand glittering pieces on the marble floor.

Conrad didn't fight back. All the arrogant posture, the condescending smirks, and the decades of untouchable corporate power evaporated in an instant. As the steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists, he turned his head, casting a desperate, pleading look in my direction.

"Victoria... please," Conrad choked out, his voice pathetic and hollow. "We've been married for twenty years. You can't let them do this. We built this company together!"

"No, Conrad," I said coldly, picking up Martin’s blood-stained leather briefcase and zipping it shut. "You built a prison out of lies, and tonight, you finally moved into the permanent cell."

Two agents hauled Conrad toward the elevators, his expensive Italian leather shoes dragging uselessly against the stone floor.

Meanwhile, another team of federal investigators surrounded Vanessa—or Maya Cross—who stood frozen beside the chair she had occupied all evening. She hadn't attempted to run, nor had she resisted. She simply stared down at the flash drive resting on the glass table, her hands trembling slightly at her sides.

"Maya Cross," the lead agent said, stepping toward her with a pair of zip-ties. "You're being detained for identity theft, fraud, and impersonation of a licensed attorney."

I stepped between the agent and Maya, holding up my hand. "Hold on, Agent Vance."

The agent frowned, looking down at me. "Counselor, she broke federal and state laws by fabricating credentials to infiltrate a corporate board."

"She did," I acknowledged calmly, turning to look at Maya. "She also provided the exact digital forensics and unedited financial ledgers required to bust open an eighteen-year-old murder and embezzlement cover-up that your agency closed prematurely in 2008. If it weren't for her infiltrating this boardroom, Conrad would have successfully completed the Redwood Meridian acquisition and drained the remaining pension funds of twelve thousand employees."

Maya looked up at me, surprise flickering in her tear-filled eyes. "Why are you helping me? I came here to destroy you, too."

"You wanted justice for your uncle Julian," I said softly, stepping closer. "And so did I, even if it took me eighteen years to realize the truth of what I signed. You aren't my enemy, Maya. We just had the same ghost haunting us."

Agent Vance looked between the two of us, letting out a heavy sigh as he lowered his zip-ties. "The U.S. Attorney's office will have final say, but given her cooperation and the scale of Conrad Sterling's financial crimes, her charges will likely be reduced to probation and community service in exchange for turning state's witness."

Maya let out a ragged breath, the tension finally draining from her shoulders as she sank back down into the chair.

By 3:00 AM, the executive floor was cleared of federal agents, leaving behind an eerie, sterile silence. I sat alone at the head of the boardroom table, the very place where Conrad had tried to humiliate me less than twelve hours earlier.

My phone chimed. It was an incoming text from an unknown local hospital number.

Patient Martin Sloane is currently in stable condition, intensive care. Concussion, broken ribs, but he's going to make it.

A wave of profound relief washed over me. Martin was alive. The dead-man's switch had done its job, and the truth had finally broken the surface.

Suddenly, the heavy boardroom doors clicked open. I looked up, expecting an investigator or a lingering federal agent. Instead, a tall, imposing figure stepped into the dim light of the room. It was Arthur Vance, senior partner of Vanguard Capital and the largest institutional shareholder in Meridian Holdings.

Arthur walked slowly toward the table, his expression unreadable as he looked at the shattered glass on the floor and the empty seat where Conrad had sat.

"I heard the news, Victoria," Arthur said quietly, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite me. "The board has already held an emergency midnight vote via encrypted conference call. Conrad Sterling has been permanently stripped of his CEO title, his voting shares, and his executive privileges."

I nodded slowly, keeping my hands folded on the glass. "And the Redwood Meridian acquisition?"

" Canceled permanently," Arthur replied, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the table. "We audited the shell companies like you suggested before the meeting yesterday. They were a front to siphon company assets offshore. If that deal had gone through, Meridian Holdings would have collapsed by the end of the fiscal quarter."

Arthur paused, his sharp eyes locking onto mine with deep respect.

"The board needs stability, Victoria," Arthur continued. "The CEO position is vacant. And frankly, you're the only person who can clean up the rot Conrad left behind. We want you to step into the role permanently. Chief Executive Officer of Meridian Holdings."

May you like

I looked around the grand boardroom, remembering the exact moment earlier that day when Conrad had paraded his mistress in front of me, expecting me to cry, beg, or lose control. He had thought he was destroying my life.

Instead, he had handed me the keys to the entire empire.
