Chapter 5 - The Darkness in the Vault"Stay behind me," Adrian ordered in a low, lethal hiss.

He didn't draw a gun; instead, his hand slid inside his coat, pulling out a heavy, suppressed tactical pistol with practiced, terrifying ease.

"Well, well, well," a voice echoed through the subterranean chamber, bouncing off the concrete walls with a sickening, mocking resonance. "The great Adrian Moretti, reduced to grave-robbing with a housemaid."

From the shadows near the freight elevator stepped a tall, gaunt man wearing an immaculate trench coat. Even in the near-total darkness, Claire recognized the sharp, aquiline nose and the silver-rimmed glasses.

It was Marcus Vance—the son of Victor Vance, and the current head of the East Coast syndicate.

"Marcus," Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of fear, laced instead with pure, concentrated venom. "I thought your father taught you better than to crawl back into a city where your name is worth a bullet."

"My father is rotting in a federal black site because of you, Moretti!" Marcus shouted, stepping closer into the faint sliver of moonlight filtering down through the ventilation shaft. He raised a heavy caliber revolver, pointing it squarely at Adrian’s chest. "And you think you can just sweep his legacy under the rug? The ledger belongs to us. Hand it over, and maybe—just maybe—I'll let the girl walk away."

Claire’s heart stopped. She reached instinctively into her pocket, gripping the iron key so hard the metal bit into her palm.

Adrian didn't lower his weapon, but he shifted his stance slightly, placing his body squarely between Marcus and Claire.

"You want the ledger, Marcus?" Adrian taunted softly. "Come and take it. But you should know... your father didn't hide it here to protect your family's honor. He hid it here because it contains the names of every politician who helped your uncle assassinate your own mother."

Marcus froze, his finger tightening on the trigger. "You're lying."

"Am I?" Adrian challenged, taking a slow step forward. "Ask yourself why your father fled the country the night the warehouse burned. He didn't run from me, Marcus. He ran from them. The Syndicate board. They were cleaning house, starting with him, and ending with anyone who remembered who really pushed Elena Bennett's car off that bridge."

Marcus’s face twisted with rage and confusion. His hand shook as he aimed back and forth between Adrian and Claire. "Kill them! Kill them both!"

Suddenly, from the dark rafters above, a heavy shadow dropped silently onto Marcus’s guard, taking him down with a dull crunch of bone.

Chaos erupted.

Gunshots shattered the eerie silence, muzzle flashes lighting up the cavernous vault like strobe lights. Bullets ricocheted off the titanium walls, sending sparks flying through the air.

"Run to the vault door!" Adrian roared over the gunfire, grabbing Claire by the arm and shoving her toward the massive circular lock. "Use the key! Now!"

Claire didn't hesitate. She sprinted through the crossfire, slammed the rusted iron key into the mechanical slot, and pressed her palm against the biometric glass scanner right as Adrian twisted his platinum ring into the secondary tumbler.
