Chapter 10 - The Unwritten Page

That evening, Daniel and I hosted a small dinner party in our penthouse apartment to celebrate my promotion to COO. The rooms were filled with colleagues, mentors, and friends who loved me not for what I could provide for them, but for who I was—flawed, brilliant, resilient, and entirely self-made.

As I stood on the balcony holding a glass of champagne, looking out over the glittering lights of Charlotte, the spring breeze caught my hair, carrying the distant, faint scent of blooming jasmine from the courtyard below.

My mother used to say that family was the only anchor that mattered in this life. She believed that anchors were meant to hold you down in the mud, keeping you trapped in the shallow waters where you could never spread your wings and fly.

The door behind me opened, and Daniel stepped out onto the balcony, wrapping his warm arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin gently on my shoulder.

“Penny for your thoughts, COO Vance?” he whispered, kissing my cheek.

I looked down at my left hand—at the simple, elegant platinum band on my ring finger, and beyond it, at the vast, open highway of a future that belonged to no one else in the world.
