Chapter 5 - THE SHOWDOWN IN THE SHADOWS

"Don't test me, boy!" Elena shrieked, her hands shaking violently as she held the pistol.

Before she could pull the trigger, Mateo lunged.

He didn't strike her with the crowbar. He grabbed her wrists, twisting the gun upward toward the ceiling.

BANG!

A bullet shattered the fluorescent light fixture overhead, plunging the room into chaotic, flickering shadows.

Elena screamed, clawing at Mateo’s face with her sharp acrylic nails, leaving bloody gashes along his cheek. But Mateo felt no pain. Fueled by six years of accumulated agony, he twisted her wrist until she dropped the weapon.

The gun clattered across the floor, sliding under the medical cabinet.

Mateo shoved Elena away. She fell backward into a glass tray of surgical instruments, crashing to the floor in a heap of metal and broken glass, screaming in fury.

Mateo rushed to Santiago’s gurney. "Santiago, stay still!" With trembling hands, he ripped the IV tape off his brother's arm and pulled out the needle.

"Mateo... I knew you'd come," Santiago sobbed, wrapping his small arms tightly around Mateo’s neck.

"I've got you, buddy. I've got you," Mateo breathed, lifting his brother into his arms.

"Re-secure the room!" A sharp, authoritative voice boomed from the hallway.

Mateo turned. Standing in the doorway was Arthur Vance, flanked by three heavily armed private security guards carrying submachine guns. Behind them stood Dr. Miller, holding a stainless-steel medical transport case.

"Well, well," Arthur Vance said smoothly, stepping into the room and eyeing Mateo with utter contempt. "The street rat has a surprisingly good nose. But you're too late, boy."

"Let us go," Mateo said, holding Santiago tightly against his chest, shielding the boy with his own body. "If you touch him, I'll make sure the police know everything."

Arthur laughed—a cold, hollow sound. "The police? Boy, I own the chief of police in this municipality. Who do you think guaranteed our privacy here tonight? You're a dirty, impoverished cartel suspect who broke into a private medical facility. If my men kill you right now... it's self-defense."

Arthur signaled to his head guard. "Kill the teenager. Sedate the boy and get him onto the operating table. The flight to Zurich leaves in two hours."

"Yes, sir," the guard said, raising his suppressed rifle and aiming it directly at Mateo’s forehead.

Santiago buried his face in Mateo’s shoulder, screaming in terror.

Mateo squeezed his eyes shut, pressing his lips against Santiago’s hair. I'm sorry, Santiago. I tried. I tried so hard.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

Gunshots echoed through the corridor—but they didn't come from the guard in front of him.

The head guard’s chest exploded in blood as three bullets hit him from behind. He collapsed to the floor. The other two guards spun around in panic, but a tactical flashbang grenade bounced into the room.

BLINDING WHITE LIGHT. DEAFENING BOOM.

"FEDERAL POLICE! NOBODY MOVE!"

Screams rang out as armored officers in state police uniforms flooded the room, tackling Arthur Vance and Dr. Miller to the floor.

Mateo collapsed to his knees, shielding Santiago beneath his body as chaotic shouting and footsteps filled the room.

When the smoke cleared, a familiar figure stepped through the shattered doorway, holding a badge and a thick file.

It was Ms. Valeria, the social worker—accompanied by Judge Alvarez himself.
