Chapter 10 - A New EmpireSix months later, the Manhattan skyline glittered beneath a brilliant summer sunset through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse on the Hudson.

The past was behind them, buried under new beginnings. The Chicago syndicate had been dismantled, Gallo was serving a life sentence in a federal supermax, and Marco Vitali had officially stepped down from active underworld operations, handing the reins over to Victor while transitioning his empire entirely into legitimate global shipping and philanthropic medical foundations.

At the large mahogany dining table, nine-year-old Dante was busy building an elaborate skyscraper out of Lego bricks, his dark hair falling across his forehead, his sharp cheekbones caught in the golden evening light.

"Dad! Look, I made St. Augustine Hospital!" Dante shouted proudly, holding up a crooked plastic tower.

Marco walked across the hardwood floor, holding two mugs of coffee. He handed one to Elena, who stood leaning against the kitchen island, watching their son with a soft, contented smile.

"It looks remarkably stable, buddy," Marco said, ruffling Dante's dark hair the exact same way he used to do to his own reflection in the mirror. "Though I think your mother is the only one qualified to perform surgery on the second floor."

Dante laughed, turning back to his blocks.

Elena turned her head, resting her cheek against Marco's shoulder as he wrapped his strong arms around her waist from behind, pulling her close against his chest. The scars from the bullets were fading into silver lines beneath his shirt, symbols of a war they had both survived.

"You know," Elena whispered, sipping her coffee while looking out over the magnificent spread of the city lights, "when I woke up at 2:47 in the morning six months ago, I thought my life was falling apart."

Marco pressed a warm, lingering kiss to the side of her neck, his voice a soft, rumbling vibration against her skin. "And instead, Rossi... it was just beginning."
