CHAPTER 5 — THE NUN'S DYING CONFESSION

Rain hammered against the windows as the elderly priest stepped inside.

No one spoke.

The faded photograph remained in Arturo's trembling hands.

Two newborn babies.

Wrapped in identical white blankets.

Sleeping peacefully.

Completely unaware that one decision made that night would change countless lives forever.

The priest slowly removed his wet coat.

"My name is Father Gabriel."

"I served at Hospital de la Esperanza when I was a young seminarian."

He looked toward Doña Beatriz.

"I wish we were meeting under happier circumstances."

Beatriz couldn't answer.

Her face had become almost colorless.

Father Gabriel carefully opened the old leather satchel.

Inside were several worn notebooks tied together with a blue ribbon.

A small silver crucifix.

And a weathered journal with the hospital's faded seal pressed into its cover.

"I have carried these for thirty-four years."

"They belonged to Sister Magdalena."

"The nun who worked in the maternity ward."

Elena leaned forward.

"The woman who wrote the letter?"

Father Gabriel slowly shook his head.

"No."

"She was the woman who tried to stop what happened."

The priest took a deep breath.

"On the night of October 18, 1972..."

"A terrible storm struck Mexico City."

"The hospital lost electricity for almost twenty minutes."

"Emergency lanterns were the only light inside the maternity ward."

Lightning flashed outside.

Almost as if nature itself remembered.

"Two women gave birth within minutes of each other."

"One came from one of the city's wealthiest families."

"The other..."

"...arrived alone."

"No husband."

"No relatives."

"No money."

"Only faith."

Elena's heart tightened.

"What happened?"

Father Gabriel lowered his eyes.

"The poor mother died shortly after giving birth."

The room fell silent.

"Her son survived."

Arturo stared at the priest.

"And the second baby?"

Father Gabriel looked directly at Beatriz.

"The wealthy family's baby..."

"...was stillborn."

A sharp cry escaped Beatriz's lips.

"No..."

Father Gabriel nodded sadly.

"The doctor confirmed the child had no heartbeat."

"The family patriarch refused to accept the disgrace."

"He believed the death of the family's only heir would destroy the Mendoza name."

Elena felt sick.

"What are you saying?"

The priest closed the journal.

"I'm saying..."

"...someone suggested replacing the dead baby."

"No!"

Beatriz shouted, jumping to her feet.

"My father would never do something like that!"

Father Gabriel didn't argue.

Instead, he quietly placed an old hospital document on the table.

Across the bottom...

Was Rafael Mendoza's unmistakable signature.

Beatriz stared at it.

Her knees nearly gave out.

"I've... never seen this."

The priest nodded.

"Because he made certain you never would."

Meanwhile...

Upstairs...

Leo suddenly sat upright in bed.

His eyes were still closed.

Almost as though he were asleep.

Yet softly...

He whispered into the darkness.

"Don't cry."

"She's with him."

Downstairs, Elena felt a strange urge to check on him.

She quietly climbed the stairs.

When she opened his bedroom door...

Leo was sitting on the edge of the bed.

Still asleep.

Still speaking.

"The lady says..."

"...the mother's name was Rosa."

Elena froze.

"Leo?"

His eyes remained closed.

"She wore a blue ribbon."

"She sang even when she was afraid."

"And she kissed her baby three times."

Before Elena could move...

Leo slowly lay back on the pillow.

The room became completely silent.

Downstairs...

Father Gabriel had just opened Sister Magdalena's journal.

Most of the pages were filled with ordinary hospital notes.

Births.

Deaths.

Prayers.

Then...

Near the middle...

One page had been marked with a pressed white lily.

The priest carefully unfolded it.

Written in neat handwriting were the words:

"Tonight I witnessed a child stolen in the name of family honor.

May God forgive every soul involved.

The mother's final words before she died were:

'Please... tell my little boy that Heaven will always find him.'"

Elena's breathing stopped.

Slowly...

She walked back into the dining room.

Without saying a word...

She repeated exactly what Leo had whispered upstairs.

"The mother's name..."

"...was Rosa."

Father Gabriel looked at her in complete disbelief.

"I never mentioned her name."

No one had.

The journal had remained closed.

The page with Rosa's name was still hidden beneath Father Gabriel's hand.

There was no possible way Leo could have known.

The priest slowly made the sign of the cross.

Then whispered,

"Dear God..."

"What exactly is guiding that child?"

Before anyone could answer...

A loud crash echoed from the garden.

Everyone rushed outside.

The wooden door of the Talavera shrine stood wide open.

The candle inside burned with an impossibly bright flame.

Resting at the feet of the Virgin...

Where moments earlier there had been nothing...

Lay a tiny pair of faded blue baby shoes.

Father Gabriel stared at them in horror.

His lips trembled.

"I buried those shoes..."

May you like

"...beside Rosa's grave."
