Chapter 9 - THE UNOPENED LETTERTwo weeks passed before Nathan received a package at the front gate.

It wasn't dropped off by a courier. It was left by a local parish priest who looked nervous and refused to step inside the courtyard.

Nathan sat in his office, his fingers resting on the heavy manila envelope. Inside was a single polaroid photograph and a handwritten note.

The photograph showed a small, sunny playground in a quiet town three states away. A little girl with bright pigtails was swinging high on a swing set, laughing, her face frozen in pure, unfiltered joy. Standing a few yards away, watching her with a cautious, protective smile, was Claire.

Nathan turned the photograph over. On the back, written in familiar handwriting:

She still asks about the man who let her share a cookie.

We are safe. We are starting over. I hope one day you can find peace in this life, Nathan. You were never just a monster. You were a man trapped in the dark who forgot how to see the light.

— Claire.

Nathan stared at the photograph for a long, silent hour.

He didn't chase them. He didn't send his enforcers to track down the small-town bus station or the rented apartment across state lines.

For the first time in two years, Nathan Caldwell reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a small, smooth stone—the one Lily had brought him from the garden months ago—and placed it carefully beside his notepad.

He hadn't laughed in two years.

And as he looked at the photograph of the little girl laughing on the swing, the heavy, crushing weight on his chest finally, slowly, began to lift.
