Chapter 3 - The Ghost of AshcroftIn a high-security, ultra-modern boardroom on the fifty-fifth floor of the Ashcroft Tower in midtown Manhattan, the panoramic windows offered a breathtaking, unobstructed view of the city skyline.

At the head of a massive slab of black obsidian conference table sat Saraphina Moretti.
She was dressed in a tailored, midnight-blue cashmere suit that concealed nothing of her commanding presence. Her hair was swept back into a sleek, flawless knot. There was no trace of the pale, bleeding woman who had clawed at the marble floor just days ago. On her lap rested a soft, cashmere-wrapped bundle. Inside, her newborn son slept soundly, completely sheltered from the storm outside.
Standing around the table were seven of the most ruthless corporate litigators, forensic accountants, and restructuring specialists in the Western hemisphere.
At the opposite end sat Vincent Ashcroft—a silver-haired titan of global finance whose cold, calculating eyes mirrored the exact shade of Saraphina's. For decades, Wall Street whispered about Vincent Ashcroft as a mythical kingmaker who operated in the shadows. None of them had ever connected him to the quiet, unassuming Sarah Ashcroft who married Damian Moretti.
"The extradition order has been executed in Paris," lead counsel Marcus Vance reported, sliding a tablet across the obsidian table toward Saraphina. "Mr. Moretti and Ms. Voss are currently being held in separate detention facilities pending transport. All international assets have been successfully repatriated."
Saraphina looked down at the tablet. Her finger lightly traced the edge of the screen, her expression impassive.
"And the Moretti Group subsidiaries?" she asked, her voice calm, melodic, and terrifyingly cold.
"Deconstructed and absorbed," Vance replied with a faint, respectful nod. "By tomorrow morning, the board will vote to liquidate the parent company entirely. The name Moretti will officially cease to exist in global finance. Every asset will be rebranded under Ashcroft Holdings."
Vincent Ashcroft leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, a proud, sharp smile touching the corners of his mouth. He looked at his daughter, then down at the sleeping infant in her arms.
"You played a long game, Sarah," Vincent said, his voice deep and resonant. "Three years playing the devoted, quiet wife. Living in his shadow. Allowing him to build his arrogant little empire on foundations I quietly funded from day one, while he thought he was the master of the universe."
Saraphina looked down at her son, her fingers brushing his tiny, perfect cheek.
"Men like Damian make a fundamental error when they look at a woman," Saraphina said softly, her eyes flashing with a dangerous intelligence. "They mistake quietness for weakness. They mistake patience for submission. He thought he was civilizing me by keeping me in the penthouse, away from the boardroom. He never realized that the penthouse was just the observation deck."

She lifted her head, locking eyes with every high-powered executive in the room.
"He wanted an empire. I gave him one—just so I could watch him stand on top of it when I pulled the floor out from under his feet."
