Chapter 6 - THE TRUE VALUE OF GOLD

🛍️ THE ULTIMATE PAYBACK SHOPPING SPREE: WATCH WHAT HAPPENED WHEN THE EXCLUDED CHILDREN TOOK OVER THE LUXURY BOUTIQUES! 🛍️The Fifth Avenue shopping district was bustling with post-holiday shoppers, but inside the exclusive, high-end children’s boutique where Dia usually took Beckett, the atmosphere was quiet, warm, and smelled of expensive vanilla.
The store manager, a woman named Genevieve who had spent years bowing and scraping to my sister’s extravagant spending, looked up as the door chimed. When she saw me walk in with Theo and Ren, her eyes widened in immediate recognition. She had seen the morning news; everyone in high society had. She knew the Marrow name was now radioactive, but she also knew who had pulled the trigger.
“Ms. Maro,” Genevieve said, her voice dropping into an incredibly respectful tone as she hurried around the counter. “Welcome. We were so deeply saddened to hear the news this morning about your sister’s family… but we are entirely at your service. How can we assist you today?”
“My daughter needs an entirely new winter wardrobe, Genevieve,” I said, placing my black corporate Amex card firmly on the glass counter. “Coat, dresses, sweaters, everything. And my son needs several pairs of shoes. The best quality you have in stock.”
“Right away,” Genevieve whispered, gesturing to two of her top personal shoppers. “Please, bring out the private collection for young Ren. And for the young gentleman, show him the premium leather footwear line.”
For the next two hours, I watched a transformation that had nothing to do with vanity, and everything to do with restoration.
Ren, who had spent the previous night curled into a ball on a cream couch while her cousins flaunted their designer labels, was treated like a princess. She tried on beautiful, thick wool coats in deep navy and bright scarlet. She twirled in soft velvet holiday dresses, her laughter echoing through the elite boutique, replacing the memory of her tears.
But it was Theo’s turn that broke my heart in the best way possible.
The personal shopper brought out a pair of immaculate, handcrafted Italian leather dress shoes—sleek, perfectly polished, and sturdy. Theo looked at them as if they were made of solid gold. He stepped into them tentatively, walking across the thick, plush carpet of the boutique, looking down at his feet.
“How do they feel, Theo?” I asked, walking over and kneeling down beside him.
Theo’s eyes were wet, but he forced a brave, beautiful smile. “They don't hurt, Mom. And… they don't look like sale-rack shoes. They look like the kind of shoes a man wears when he’s important.”
“You are important, Theo,” I said, my voice thick with emotion as I took his hands. “With or without these shoes, you are brilliant, you are strong, and you are going to do incredible things in this world. Never let anyone’s expensive labels make you forget that your worth comes from who you are inside.”
“I know, Mom,” he whispered, throwing his arms around my neck. “But thank you for showing them that they can’t push us around anymore.”
When we went to check out, the total on the screen was a figure that would have made the old Elena gasp. But as I slid my card and signed my name, I felt absolutely no guilt. This wasn't spent out of arrogance or greed; it was the physical manifestation of our independence. We didn't need the Marrow family trust fund. We didn't need Sylvie’s conditional charity.
As we walked out of the store, Ren holding a massive, glossy shopping bag and wearing her brand-new cashmere winter hat, my phone buzzed with an automated alert from the state court system database.
