Chapter 14 - The Secret Weapon

By Sunday evening, our living room looked less like a home and more like a high-stakes war room. Spread across our large oak dining table were tax returns, corporate charters, bank statements, and twenty years of medical research logs.
Sitting across from us was Arthur Pendelton, Cassandra’s uncle—a retired federal prosecutor turned defense attorney with white hair, sharp blue eyes, and a sharp, cynical smile that had dismantled half the corporate syndicates in Oregon.
Arthur adjusted his reading glasses, sliding the Manila folder back across the table after spending three hours meticulously analyzing every single page of Calder’s supposed "indictment."
"Well," Arthur grunted, leaning back in his chair and lacing his fingers over his stomach. "Calder’s legal team is playing dirty, but they’re also making a fatal tactical error."
I leaned forward, my heart hammering. "What error?"
"They’re relying on the statute of limitations under Swiss banking laws from 2018, which they misinterpreted," Arthur explained, tapping a legal pad with his fountain pen. "More importantly, the offshore accounts you used weren't registered under your personal name, Damon. They were registered under a blind charitable trust dedicated to neonatal research—a trust that was legally dissolved and audited by the IRS back in 2021 when Prescott Technologies went public."
I stared at him in disbelief. "Audited? I never received an audit notice."
"Of course you didn't," Arthur smiled grimly. "Your former CFO, Marcus Vance, handled the corporate restructuring before you took the company public. He knew those accounts existed. In fact, based on these routing numbers, Marcus was the primary signatory on the secondary trust layer."
Cassandra gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You mean Marcus set you up?"
"He didn't just set him up," Arthur said smoothly. "Calder didn't find those files by accident. Marcus leaked them to Calder’s acquisition team as leverage to force Damon back into the CEO seat, because without Damon’s cryptographic signature, Calder cannot legally secure the federal government grants attached to the neonatal patents."
The puzzle pieces clicked into place with terrifying clarity. Marcus hadn't come to our house as an emissary of Calder; he had come as a desperate, cornered rat trying to blackmail me into saving his own sinking corporate career.
"So what do we do?" I asked, my fists clenching under the table. "If we don't go to Seattle tomorrow morning, what happens?"
"We don't go to Seattle," Arthur said, standing up and buttoning his tweed jacket with a confident grin. "We go straight to the United States District Court in downtown Portland. We file an emergency injunction against Calder for extortion and corporate intimidation, and we attach Marcus Vance as a co-defendant in a criminal conspiracy investigation."

Cassandra looked over at me, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief and fierce pride. She reached across the table, taking my hand and squeezing it tightly.
"Let's do it," she whispered.
