Chapter 16 - The Ultimate Betrayal

"Order! Order in the court!" Judge Vance slammed his gavel down twice, the sharp crack echoing like a gunshot through the wood-paneled room. The gallery immediately quieted down, though whispers continued to ripple through the rows of spectators.

Marcus’s lead attorney jumped to his feet, his face red with indignation. "Objection, Your Honor! This is a frivolous delay tactic! Mr. Prescott is under federal scrutiny for offshore asset diversion, and—"

"Sit down, counselor," Judge Vance interrupted coldly, fixing Calder’s attorney with a blistering stare. "Mr. Pendelton hasn't even presented his evidence yet. If you interrupt my courtroom again without standing recognition, I will hold you in contempt. Mr. Pendelton, proceed."

Arthur stepped forward, laying a thick sheaf of documents onto the podium. He didn't raise his voice; he spoke with the calm, methodical precision of a prosecutor who knew he had already won the chess match before the first piece was moved.

"Your Honor, the petitioner, Marcus Vance, presented my client with fabricated banking records originating from a dissolved charitable trust," Arthur stated clearly, his voice carrying to every corner of the room. "Furthermore, we have subpoenaed phone records, encrypted email threads, and financial audit logs proving that Mr. Vance actively forged secondary signature blocks on those Zurich accounts in an attempt to coerce my client into signing a multi-million dollar corporate merger under duress."

Marcus looked like he had just swallowed a gallon of acid. He turned sharply to his lead attorney, whispering frantically, but the lawyer just shook his head, looking horrified as Arthur handed up the digital forensic analysis proving the document tampering.

Judge Vance flipped through the papers, his brow furrowing deeper with every page.

"Mr. Vance," the judge said slowly, looking directly down at Marcus across the courtroom. "Do you have anything to say in response to these allegations?"

Marcus stood up slowly, his legs visibly shaking beneath the mahogany table. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. The polished, untouchable corporate bulldog who had once ruled Wall Street was completely stripped of his armor.

"Your Honor," Marcus choked out, his voice cracking. "It was... it was a corporate strategy. We needed him back. The company was failing."

"A corporate strategy," Judge Vance repeated, his voice dripping with absolute disgust. "Extortion and blackmail are federal felonies, Mr. Vance, not corporate strategies. Federal marshals, take the defendant into custody."

Before Marcus could even blink, two federal marshals stepped out from the side doors of the courtroom, heavy handcuffs jingling as they grabbed Marcus by the shoulders and hauled him backward away from the table.

"Damon! You can't do this!" Marcus screamed, thrashing against the marshals as he was dragged down the center aisle of the courtroom. "I made you! I built Prescott Technologies with you! You're nothing without this company!"

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I just stood tall beside Cassandra, watching the ghost of my former life get hauled out the heavy oak doors in handcuffs.
