Chapter 10 - The Last LaughThree months later.

The penthouse on Fifth Avenue was a gilded cage, just as I had known it would be. Leo was running down the long, marble-floored hallway, laughing as he chased a mechanical toy puppy, his cheeks flushed with healthy, vibrant color. The experimental gene therapy hadn't just saved his life; it had completely eradicated the hereditary decay. He was healthier than he had ever been.

And I was trapped.

Every exit was guarded. Every phone call was monitored. Nico had won. He had secured his biological legacy, keeping his wife and his son locked safely inside his fortress of glass and steel.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the rainy New York streets below, holding a cup of cold coffee that I hadn't touched in an hour.

The heavy mahogany door of the master study clicked open.

Nico walked in, wearing his customary tailored suit, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire who controlled half the world's pharmaceutical markets. But as he crossed the room toward me, I noticed something different in his step. A slight hesitation. A microscopic flinch in his right shoulder.

He reached for his coffee cup on the marble counter, but his fingers spasmed, knocking the ceramic mug to the floor where it shattered into a thousand sharp pieces.

Nico froze. He stared down at his trembling right hand, his face draining of all color.

I slowly turned around from the window, a cold, slow smile curving my lips—the exact smile he had taught me over the last three agonizing months.

"You dropped your cup, Nico," I said softly, stepping closer to him.

Nico looked up, his dark eyes wide with a sudden, dawning horror as he realized what had happened to him during those frantic transfusions in Room 204. By giving his own modified, synthetic-spliced blood and marrow twice in one night to save Leo, his body’s fragile cellular balance had tipped past the point of no return.

The timer hadn't just gone off for Leo. It had caught up with its creator.

"You... you knew," Nico whispered, his voice cracking as he clutched his chest, stumbling backward against the marble counter. "The second extraction... you switched the saline drip in the prep room... you gave me an overdose of the cellular accelerator..."

"I didn't have to do anything, Nico," I replied, my voice as cold and emotionless as the winter wind howling against the glass. "You built a cage so strong to trap us... that you forgot to check who was holding the key."

Leo ran into the room, stopping a few feet away, looking up at his father with innocent, wide eyes.

May you like

"Daddy?" Leo asked, tilting his head. "Are you okay?"

Nico fell to his knees on the marble floor, gasping for breath as the color faded from his face entirely, leaving the great mastermind at the mercy of the empire he had built on blood and lies.
