CHAPTER 4: The Shadows Beneath the Throne

His legs burned. His lungs felt like they were filled with crushed glass.
By the time Richard reached the 58th floor, his shirt was soaked with sweat, his silver tie discarded somewhere in the stairwell. He could hear the distant, muffled sound of sirens outside, but inside the concrete core of the building, it was an eerie, silent tomb.
He cracked open the heavy fire door of the 59th floor.
The executive level was deserted. The lights were dimmed, running on emergency backup power. He crept down the plushly carpeted hallway toward the private office of the Chairman—his father's old office, now occupied by Julian Sterling.
Through the frosted glass doors, he could hear voices.
"The funds have been escrowed," Julian Sterling was saying, his voice tight with nervous excitement. "We just need the final digital authorization from Richard’s terminal. Where is Vance? He was supposed to have the bypass key."
"He's dealing with a minor delay," a cold, foreign voice replied. It was Mr. Chen, the lead representative of the Singapore consortium. "But we cannot wait, Mr. Sterling. The market opens in Tokyo in twenty minutes. If the merger is not registered, the offer is withdrawn."
Richard stepped out from the shadows, pushing the double doors open.
"The offer is dead, Julian."
Julian spun around, his face turning an ashen, ghostly white. He dropped his pen, his eyes wide as if looking at a specter. "R-Richard? You... you're alive? The elevator—"
"The elevator crashed," Richard said, walking into the room with slow, deliberate steps. He looked directly at Mr. Chen, then back at his godfather. "But I wasn't in it. And your little conspiracy with my father is over."
"Your father?" Julian stuttered, his eyes darting frantically. "What are you talking about? Richard, you're hysterical. You've suffered a shock. The accident—"
"Don't lie to me anymore!" Richard slammed both hands onto the mahogany desk. "I know about the substandard steel. I know about Sarah Watson. I know my father is alive, and I know you were going to let me plunge to my death to collect a multi-billion dollar insurance payout on this rotten building!"
Mr. Chen remained perfectly calm, slowly folding his hands on the table. "Mr. Harrington. You have no proof of these wild accusations. And even if you did, the board has already voted. The merger is legally binding once the digital transfer is complete. We have the majority."
"No, you don't," Richard said.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, cracked digital drive. It was the drive Lily had salvaged from his broken briefcase—the one containing the encrypted files Sarah Watson had kept hidden for fifteen years.
"This drive contains the original metallurgical reports for the core structural columns of this very tower," Richard said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "It proves that Harrington Tower is a safety hazard. If I upload this to the Department of Buildings right now, this tower will be condemned before the Tokyo market opens. Your merger will be worthless, your shares will be frozen, and you, Julian, will be ruined."
Julian’s eyes filled with a desperate, wild fury. He reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a sleek, black revolver, pointing it directly at Richard’s chest.

"I built this empire with your father, Richard!" Julian screamed, his hand shaking violently. "I won't let you destroy it for some outdated sense of morality! Give me the drive!"
"Go ahead, Julian," Richard said, taking a step forward, staring down the barrel of the gun. "Shoot me. But you should know... I'm not the only one who has these files anymore."
