Chapter 7 - The Final Eviction — "I Bought My Parents' Foreclosed Mortgage for $100 and Handed Them the Lease!"

The final act of the Carter dynasty took place on the lawn of the thirty-year-old family home in Marietta.

The moving truck was gone, the furniture had been cleared out by the liquidation agents, and the house stood empty, its windows dark and hollow under the autumn sky. My mother and father stood near the edge of the driveway, their remaining personal belongings packed into the trunk of my father's old sedan—the one vehicle the bank hadn't seized because its mileage was too high to carry any resale value.

My mother was holding a cardboard box containing her old photo albums, her face looking old, lined, and permanently stripped of the country-club elegance she had spent her life maintaining.

"The bank coordinator told us the property note was purchased by an anonymous investment group yesterday afternoon, Claire," my father said hoarsely, his hands resting on the steering wheel of his car. "We have twenty-four hours to clear the premises before the new landlord takes possession. We’re moving to an extended-stay motel near the interstate."

"You don't have to move to the motel, Dad," I said, reaching into my trench coat pocket and pulling out a clean, white envelope.

My mother looked up, a sudden, desperate surge of hope breaking through her exhaustion. "Claire? You bought the note? You used your savings to save the house for us?"

"I bought the note from the Vanguard foreclosure pool for exactly the cost of the remaining interest penalty, Mother," I said, handing the envelope to my father. "But I didn't buy it to save your house. I bought it as an investment property for my portfolio."

My father opened the envelope. Inside was a standard, legally binding Georgia residential lease agreement.

THE RESIDENTIAL LEASE CONDITIONAL CLAUSE:

The tenants, Robert and Helen Carter, are permitted to occupy the premises located at 1420 Sugarloaf Lane on a month-to-month basis. The monthly rent shall be exactly equal to my father’s monthly municipal pension deposit. Any unauthorized contact with Brittany Carter, any attempt to use the property as collateral for future loans, or any digital entry into internal Vanguard escrow systems shall result in an immediate, non-negotiable twenty-four-hour eviction notice.

My mother’s face twisted into an expression of deep, bitter horror. "You’re making us renters in our own home? You're making your own father pay you out of his pension?!"

"You told me on Wednesday night that family fixes mistakes, Mother," I said, looking her directly in her cold, dark eyes.

May you like

"Well, this is how a professional compliance officer fixes a half-million-dollar mistake. I am protecting the roof over your head, but I am permanently stripping you of the power to destroy it again. From now on, you don't own a legacy. You own a lease. And I am the landlord."

Without waiting for her reply, I turned away from their car, stepped into my own vehicle, and started the engine. The heater came on instantly, filling the cabin with a warm, clean scent of leather and fresh coffee.
