Chapter 5 - The Trap Springs

Friday afternoon arrived, painted in the same miserable gray rain that had characterized Tally’s firing.
The Callaway Group boardroom on the forty-third floor was filled with lawyers, executives, and representatives from Harfield. Davis Callaway sat at the head of the table, his skin looking sallow, sweat glistening on his forehead despite the air conditioning. Preston Hale sat beside him, tapping his pen frantically against a leather notepad.
"Alright," the lead Harfield attorney said, sliding a thick stack of documents forward. "We just need the final wire confirmation of the three-hundred-million-dollar liquidity reserve to close the transaction."
Davis looked at Preston. "Is the wire ready?"
"Initiating now," Preston said, typing rapidly on his laptop.
But as he pressed the enter key, a massive red warning banner flashed across his screen.
ERROR: TRANSACTION BLOCKED. MARGIN CALL TRIGGERED - HORIZON CAPITAL LLC.
Preston froze. "What is this?"
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Tally Breckenridge walked in. She was flanked by two men in dark, tailored suits—and behind them, federal agents wearing windbreakers with gold letters: IRS-CID.
Davis stood up so fast his chair scraped violently against the hardwood. "Tally? What is the meaning of this? Get her out of here!"
"I'm afraid she has every right to be here, Davis," a cool, terrifying voice echoed.
Vance Thorne stepped into the room. The Harfield lawyers instantly gasped, recognizing the shadow billionaire.
"Tally is the newly appointed Managing Director of Horizon Capital," Vance said, walking to the head of the table. "And as of ten minutes ago, Horizon Capital has acquired eighty-five percent of Callaway Group’s outstanding debt. We have also instituted a margin call on your liquidity reserves."
"You can't do that!" Preston screamed. "The Winslow fund—"
"The Winslow fund is empty," Tally said, stepping forward. Her voice was cold, precise, and devastating. "I built the manual override, Preston. Remember when I asked you about it? You didn't know that the fourth-quarter liquidity scenario had a hidden debt-trigger clause. When you tried to route the Harfield funds through the Panama shell accounts, you tripped the wire. You bypassed the override, which automatically transferred your entire collateral package directly to Horizon Capital."
Davis looked at Preston, his eyes bulging. "You... you idiot! What did you do?"
"He ruined you, Davis," Tally said softly, leaning over the table. "Just like you ruined me. Only I survived."
The lead IRS agent stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Davis Callaway, Preston Hale, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit money laundering, wire fraud, and grand larceny."
As the agents slammed Preston and Davis against the glass windows—the very windows Tally had looked through when she was fired—Davis stared at her, his face twisted in desperate, pathetic betrayal.

"Tally, please," he begged. "We can work this out! I'll give you everything!"
"You already did," Tally said, picking up the silver desk clock from the table where she had placed it. "And by the way, Davis. Your clock was cheap pewter. I had it appraised."
