Chapter 5 - Fire and SteelThe metallic tang of smoke began to fill the narrow hallway as the emergency vents started pumping thick, grey fumes into Sector Four.

"It's halon gas!" Marshal Hayes yelled, pulling his mask over his face and handing a spare respirator to Julianna and me. "They're trying to suffocate the entire wing! Someone initiated a remote destruction override from outside!"

"Richard," I gasped through the mask. "He knew we were coming. He had a dead-man switch set on this facility!"

"We need to move now!" Hayes drawn his sidearm, signaling two marshals to take the front while he covered our rear.

We ran down the blinding corridor, the red emergency lights flashing rhythmically like a heartbeat in a nightmare. The main exit doors at the end of the hall slammed shut with a heavy, hydraulic thud. Magnetic locks engaged.

"Stand back!" Hayes shouted, placing a small breaching charge against the door hinge.

BOOM!

Sparks flew like fireworks as the blast shattered the lock, blowing the heavy metal door outward. We scrambled through the smoke, coughing and stumbling into the courtyard.

Outside, the rain was pouring harder, washing away the grey soot clinging to our clothes. But as we reached the perimeter gate, three black SUVs pulled up, blocking our escape route entirely.

The tinted windows rolled down.

Sitting in the passenger seat of the lead vehicle was not Richard—it was his chief legal counsel and fixing agent, Arthur Vance (no relation to my family), a ruthless attorney known as 'The Sculptor' for his ability to reshape evidence and erase people.

"Judge Vance!" Arthur called out over a loudspeaker, his voice calm and mockingly polite. "You are currently trespassing on private property and engaging in the unauthorized removal of a committed state ward. Step away from the patient, or my security team will be forced to exercise lethal force under defense-of-property statutes."

I stepped in front of Julianna, shielding her with my body.

"You're too late, Arthur!" I shouted into the wind. "The warrant was signed by the Federal Appeals Bench! Every byte of data from this facility has already been uploaded to the Department of Justice cloud server!"

Arthur smiled—a cold, shark-like grin.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Elena," he said smoothly. "But you forgot one fundamental rule of power. The cloud doesn't matter... if the people holding the keys don't live long enough to testify."

He raised a small black remote controller.

"Did you really think Richard was sitting quietly in that interrogation room?" Arthur continued. "He posted bail twenty minutes ago. A high-court injunction signed by State Supreme Justice Sterling—his uncle—overturned your arrest order. You're no longer a judge, Elena. As of midnight, you've been officially suspended pending a psychological evaluation."

My heart sank into an abyss. His uncle! I had forgotten about Justice Vance Sterling, the corrupt senior magistrate sitting on the State Appeals Board. They had executed a lightning-fast judicial coup while I was in the field.

"You can't suspend me without a full bench hearing!" I yelled.

"We just did," Arthur replied coldly. "And right now, you're an armed, unstable former judge who just kidnapped a psychiatric patient. Guys... take them."

Armed guards stepped out of the SUVs, their assault rifles raised, pointing straight at us.

Suddenly, a blinding beam of light cut through the rain from the sky.

The deafening roar of twin helicopter blades tore through the night air as a massive State Police Tactical Chopper hovered directly above the courtyard. Spotlights pinned Arthur's vehicles in an inescapable beam of brilliance.

Over a mega-horn, a voice boomed across the estate:

"This is the Office of the Federal Prosecutor! Drop your weapons immediately! Richard Sterling and Justice Vance Sterling have just been taken into federal custody under the RICO Act!"

Arthur’s face turned white as chalk. He looked at the sky, then at me.

I took a slow step forward, pulling my badge from my coat and holding it high in the beam of the helicopter's spotlight.

"You forgot one detail, Arthur," I said, my voice cutting through the roar of the engines. "I didn't sign that search warrant as a State Judge. I signed it as a Special Federal Prosecutor assigned by the United States Attorney General two hours ago. My authority doesn't stop at the state line... and your corrupted justices can't protect you here."
