Chapter 5 - The Penthouse SanctuaryBy midnight, Rachel was resting in the guest suite of Dylan’s luxury penthouse, hooked up to an IV administered by a private, discreet physician Dylan kept on retainer. The fever was breaking, and color was slowly returning to her cheeks.

Sophie and Laya were asleep in a massive king-sized guest bed down the hall, buried under goose-down comforters, clutching two brand-new stuffed animals Dylan had bought them on the way.
In the sprawling glass-walled study overlooking the glittering skyline of the city, Dylan sat behind his desk.
His phone was dialed to Mark, his lead corporate counsel and fixer.
“Mark, I want you to wake up our legal team, the federal prosecutor’s office, and every major investigative journalist in the tri-state area,” Dylan ordered, his voice cutting through the secure line like a diamond saw.
“Boss, it’s past midnight,” Mark replied, sounding bewildered. “What’s happening?”
“We are about to declare war on the Ashcroft Dynasty,” Dylan said coldly. “I want every financial record, environmental audit, and subsidiary shell company linked to Jonathan Ashcroft audited within the next twelve hours. And pull up the 2016 wrongful termination suit filed under the name Rachel Vance.”

Mark went completely silent on the other end. “Rachel Vance? The architect who disappeared? Boss, that's a radioactive file. Ashcroft buried that deeper than state secrets.”
“Then dig it up,” Dylan snapped. “If it costs every penny I have to tear their empire to the ground, consider it a bargain. They hurt the wrong family.”
