Chapter 8 - Checkmate

The terminal screen flashed a blinding, brilliant green.
Across the globe, in a high-security federal server room in Washington, D.C., an automated tripwire snapped into place. Within three seconds, the eighty-two million dollars of diverted corporate assets didn't land in a Cayman shell corporation—they were instantly intercepted, flagged, and locked down by federal asset forfeiture mandates.
And at that exact second, three hundred miles away off the coast of Florida, a private charter jet idling on a tarmac was suddenly surrounded by unmarked federal SUVs, their sirens wailing, their tactical lights flashing red and blue against the blinding morning sun.
Inside the glass-walled boardroom on the forty-second floor, Julian Vance’s phone began to vibrate violently in his pocket. He pulled it out, stared at the screen, and watched his face drain of every drop of color.
“You... what did you do?” Julian choked out, taking a panicked step backward. “You just triggered an international arrest warrant! You ruined him! You ruined us!”
Clara stood up slowly, smoothing the front of her jacket. She walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling city skyline that her husband had tried to steal and abandon.
“Grant thought he could kill me off, bury a stranger in his place, and walk away scot-free with his stolen millions,” Clara said, her voice echoing in the dead silence of the boardroom, cold and absolute as winter ice. She turned her head slightly, her eyes locking onto the stunned lawyer. “Tell him administrative errors run in the family.”
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom burst open.
Three federal agents in tactical vests strode into the room, their badges gleaming under the fluorescent lights. The lead agent bypassed Julian completely, walking straight up to Clara and pulling out a pair of polished steel handcuffs.
Julian stared in horror. “Wait! She’s the one who authorized the wire! Arrest her!”
Clara didn't resist as the cold metal clicked around her wrists. She didn't look like a criminal; she looked like a queen who had just burned her own kingdom to the ground to ensure the enemy perished in the ash.
As the agents led her toward the private elevators, her phone buzzed in her pocket. She glanced down at the screen one last time before it was confiscated.
It was a text message from an unknown number. Just three words:
May you like
“Noah is safe. Thank you.”
Clara smiled, her head held high as the elevator doors slid shut, sealing her fate—and Grant’s eternal damnation.
