Chapter 6 - THE GUARDIANSHIP AMBUSH“They’re bypassing local jurisdiction,” I muttered, my corporate instincts locking into hyper-drive. “A court order in Oregon has no legal standing in Washington State without a multi-state enforcement filing. They’re using a fast-tracked ex-parte order signed by a corrupt judge.”

“Shall I mobilize the private security detail to intercept them at the county line?” Marcus asked.

“No,” I said, my voice dropping into an ice-cold, lethal register. “Let them come right to the front gates. I want them inside my perimeter. That way, when I destroy them legally and physically, there will be nowhere for them to run.”

I hung up the phone and turned to Emily. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, her face drained of all color, clutching Lila tighter to her chest.

“Who is it?” she whispered. “Is it Brenda?”

“Your stepmother,” I stated flatly.

“She doesn't care about Lila, Julian,” Emily said, panic rising in her voice. “She found out that my late grandfather left a multi-million-dollar trust fund in my name—a trust that automatically transfers to Lila upon my death. Brenda wants complete custody so she can control the trust!”

A dark, dangerous smile touched the corners of my mouth.

“Brenda thinks she’s playing a high-stakes game of corporate and legal chess,” I said, standing up and buttoning my cuffs. “She has no idea she just walked onto a battlefield with a warlord.”

I walked to the walk-in closet, input my biometric code into the hidden wall safe, and pulled out a sleek, heavy leather briefcase. Inside sat my master corporate seal, encrypted satellite communication devices, and copies of my standing general power of attorney agreements.

“What are you going to do?” Emily asked, watching me with a mixture of fear and awe.

“Protect what’s mine,” I said firmly.

Ten minutes later, the unmistakable roar of heavy-duty truck engines echoed up the private mountain driveway. Through the security monitors, I watched two black armored vans pull up to the front entrance, ramming my security gates open with reckless abandon.

Men in tactical black gear poured out of the vehicles, led by a sharp-faced, impeccably dressed woman in a mink coat—Brenda Hart.

I didn't wait for them to knock.

With a swift press of a button, the massive double oak doors of the mansion swung wide open. I stood alone in the center of the grand foyer, hands casually resting in my pockets, framed by the warm golden light of the chandelier against the dark, stormy night outside.

Brenda marched through the doorway, her heels clicking aggressively against the marble floor, flanked by two large men in suits holding legal binders.

“Julian Vance, I presume?” Brenda sneer, her eyes sweeping over the opulent foyer with thinly veiled greed. “I am Brenda Hart, legal guardian of Emily Hart and maternal custodian of the minor child Lila Hart. Under emergency Oregon Family Court Order 44-B, we are here to take immediate possession of the child.”

I didn't flinch. I didn't blink. I simply stared at her with a look of absolute, chilling amusement.

“You stepped onto private property, destroyed my security gates, and brought armed thugs into my home,” I said smoothly, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “You’re trespassing, Brenda. And under Washington State law, I have every right to have you and your little thugs dragged out in handcuffs.”

“Try it!” Brenda snapped, waving a stack of papers in my face. “This order is signed by Judge Harrison! We have the full authority of the law!”

“Judge Harrison,” I repeated, letting out a low, cold laugh. “Arthur Harrison. A man whose reelection campaign I personally funded through three separate political action committees, and whose brother’s hedge fund I bail out every quarter.”

Brenda’s confident smirk faltered for a fraction of a second.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket, tapped the screen twice on speaker, and held it up.

“Hello, Mr. Vance?” an anxious, trembling voice crackled through the speaker.

“Judge Harrison,” I said smoothly. “I have a woman standing in my foyer named Brenda Hart waving an emergency ex-parte order with your signature on it. She’s attempting to kidnap my daughter.”

“Oh—Good Lord!” the judge sputtered on the other end, panic evident in every syllable. “Mr. Vance, I was told—her attorney filed an emergency ex-parte under false pretenses! I didn't know it involved your family! The order is hereby rescinded! Void effective immediately!”

“Thank you, Judge,” I said. “Have a good evening.”

I tapped the screen, cutting the call dead.

The silence in the foyer was absolute. Brenda’s face went completely, chalk-white.
