Chapter 10 - THE ROAD HOMEThe sun was setting over Briar County, painting the rolling hills in deep shades of amber, gold, and bruised purple. The air was crisp with the first real chill of autumn, carrying the scent of pine and woodsmoke from the valley below.

At the edge of town, the old welcome sign—WELCOME TO BRIAR COUNTY: A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE—had already been taken down by county road crews, waiting to be replaced by something honest.

In the backseat of Caleb’s truck, Lily sat with her legs pulled up under a fleece blanket, her right arm still resting comfortably in a light fiberglass cast. On her wrist was a brand-new, replacement medical-alert watch, its screen glowing with a soft, steady green light.

In the front passenger seat, Chloe sat looking out the window at the passing landscape, her sketch pad open on her lap, a charcoal pencil moving smoothly across the paper as she sketched the fading skyline.

Caleb glanced in the rearview mirror, catching his daughter’s eye. Lily smiled back, her smile reaching all the way to her eyes—the bright, untoubled smile of a nine-year-old girl who knew her father was right beside her.

"Dad?" Lily asked softly, her voice clear and strong.

"Yeah, bug?" Caleb answered, signaling the turn onto the interstate that led away from the county line and toward a brand-new beginning.

"Are we ever coming back here?"

Caleb looked ahead at the open highway stretching out before them, bathed in the golden light of the evening sun. The ghosts of the past were locked away behind high steel walls; the empire of fear had crumbled into dust; and the road ahead was wide, clear, and entirely their own.

"No, bug," Caleb said, shifting gears and pressing his foot gently against the accelerator as they crossed the county border for the last time. "We’re going home."
