Chapter 6 - The Final Transmission

The heavy steel blast door of the communications vault groaned under the sudden, thunderous impact of a hydraulic breaching charge placed from the hallway outside.

CRASH.

Sparks showered across the concrete floor as the deadbolts snapped under the immense pressure.

“They’re blowing the inner seal!” Clara shouted, her carbine raised and trained squarely on the center of the reinforced doorway. She stood braced behind a heavy steel equipment rack, her breathing slow, steady, and perfectly controlled—the posture of a seasoned combat veteran ready for the last stand.

Beside her, Admiral Thomas Whitmore stood tall, his sidearm leveled at the entrance, his eyes locked on the twisting billow of gray smoke pouring through the cracked doorway.

On the center console, the countdown timer for the global data broadcast blinked aggressively in bright red numbers: 00:03... 00:02... 00:01...

“Broadcast override engaged!” Clara yelled over the howling alarm. “Files are away! The entire network is receiving the data packet right now!”

The heavy steel door blew inward, clattering violently against the concrete floor.

Through the smoke, three heavily armed operatives surged into the vault, their rifles raised, movement synchronized and lethal.

“Drop your weapons! Federal containment order!” the lead operative bellowed through his tactical comms mask.

Thomas didn't drop his weapon. Instead, he took half a step forward, shielding his son’s gurney with his own body. “Tell General Vance his war is over.”

Before the operatives could pull their triggers, the heavy communications speakers mounted along the bunker ceiling crackled to life with a loud, piercing electronic squeal.

An automated emergency broadcast override cut through the room, its crisp, automated voice echoing off the concrete walls:

“Attention all Department of Defense networks. Priority intercept directive executed. Global data packet received from encrypted tactical node San Clemente. Verifying file integrity... Files verified. Arrest warrants issued for Director Marcus Vance and associated contractors under charges of high treason and illegal human experimentation.”

The leading operative froze, his rifle barrel slowly dipping toward the floor as his helmet receiver blinked furiously with incoming priority recall codes from the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Stand down! That’s an official recall!” another voice shouted over the tactical radio channel in the operative’s ear. “I repeat, stand down! All units pull back to secondary extraction! The operation is terminated!”

The operatives exchanged stunned glances behind their matte-black visors. Slowly, deliberately, the lead operative lowered his weapon and took a step back toward the shattered doorway.

“It’s over, Admiral,” the operative said flatly, his voice distorted through the mask.

Thomas didn't lower his sidearm until the last of the black-clad soldiers backed out of the vault and vanished down the corridor toward the docks.

The silence that returned to the underground bunker was heavy, profound, and absolute.

Thomas slowly lowered his pistol, letting out a long, shuddering breath that seemed to carry fourteen months of agonizing grief, doubt, and fury out of his chest. He turned around and walked back to his son’s gurney.

Colin was lying completely still, but his eyes were wide, bright, and filled with a quiet, overwhelming peace.

Thomas dropped to his knees, burying his face against his son’s uninjured hand, his broad shoulders shaking as silent tears finally broke free.

“Good copy, son,” the old admiral whispered, his voice choked with emotion. “We made it. You’re home.”

Colin’s fingers twitched one last time against the crisp white sheets, lifting slightly to tap softly against the metal rail in a slow, steady, rhythmic beat.

Beside them, Clara smiled softly, letting her rifle slip safely onto the sling across her back as the first warm rays of the morning sun broke across the Pacific horizon, shining bright and clear through the shattered glass of the bunker above.
