Chapter 6 - THE POISON PROTOCOL"GET HER OFF HIM!" I screamed, lunging across the room.

The lead State Trooper didn't hesitate. He tackled Evelyn to the ground with a sickening crunch, pinning her wrist to the floor as she laughed frantically—a dry, screeching sound that didn't sound human.
"It’s potassium chloride!" Evelyn laughed hysterically, her face pressed against the cold tiles as the officer slammed the cuffs onto her wrists. "Clear, odorless, lethal in seconds! If I can't have the trust fund, NO ONE CAN!"
"DOCTOR! LOOK AT THE IV!" Taylor screamed, throwing her body over Lily’s bed.
Dr. Harrison scrambled forward, his hands shaking violently as he ripped the IV tube out of Lily’s arm just inches before the liquid reached her vein. A tiny drop of the liquid splashed onto the plastic sheet, sizzling faintly against the synthetic fabric.
"Clear line! The fluid didn't reach her bloodstream!" Dr. Harrison yelled, his voice cracking with sweat pouring down his face. "She's safe! She's okay!"
I collapsed against the side of the bed, burying my face in Lily’s blankets, my body wracked with heavy, silent sobs. Lily stirred, her little eyes fluttering open through the chaos.
"Daddy...?" she whispered, her voice tiny and rasping. "Is... is the cold gone?"
I reached up, grabbing her tiny hand, pressing it against my cheek. "Yes, sweetie. The cold is gone. Daddy’s got you. You’re never, ever going back there again."
The troopers dragged Evelyn to her feet. Her hair was torn, her expensive coat stained with floor grime, but her eyes were still burning with pure, unadulterated venom.
"You’re nothing, Mark!" Evelyn spat as they forced her toward the door. "You’re a failure! You’ll always be a penniless nobody! I built this town!"
"And you're going to rot in a federal prison in this town," Taylor said, stepping directly into Evelyn’s path.
Evelyn stopped, staring at her daughter. For the first time, she looked at Taylor not as a puppet, but as a threat. "Taylor... darling... I did everything for you... I protected you..."
SLAP!
The crack of Taylor’s hand striking Evelyn’s face echoed across the entire wing. Evelyn’s head snapped to the side, a bright red mark blooming on her pale cheek.
"Don't you ever call me 'darling' again," Taylor whispered, her voice colder than the freezer her mother had locked her child in. "Take her away."
The troopers yanked Evelyn out into the hallway. As she was marched down the corridor, every nurse, doctor, patient, and visitor lined the walls, watching her in dead, disgust-filled silence. The video clip of her sitting calmly beside the screaming freezer played on a continuous loop on fifty screens above her head.
For the next forty-eight hours, the story exploded into a global media hurricane.
National news networks picked up the leaked hospital security footage. The headline "THE FROZEN MONSTER OF ASPEN RIDGE" trended #1 across every social media platform on the planet. Millions of people watched the footage of Evelyn’s cruelty. Her charities pulled her name from their buildings within hours; her bank accounts were frozen by federal prosecutors, and the state attorney general immediately launched a formal investigation into the 1984 cold-case death of her son, Julian.
Three days later, I stood in the District Courtroom.
Judge Vance—who had previously been Evelyn’s closest political ally—sat on the bench looking pale and shaken. The courtroom was packed to absolute capacity with reporters and citizens.
"In light of the horrific digital evidence provided, the confession recorded on hospital surveillance, and the ongoing criminal indictment of the defendant, Evelyn Vance," Judge Vance declared, his voice booming through the silent room, "this court immediately terminates all parental and third-party rights of Evelyn Vance."
The judge looked down at me and Taylor, who were sitting side-by-side at the plaintiff’s table.
"Furthermore," the judge continued, "the court vacates the prior custody order. Sole physical and legal custody of Lily Vance is hereby awarded to her father, Mark Vance."
I closed my eyes and let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for years.
Taylor turned to me, tears streaming down her face. She reached out and squeezed my hand. "I’m so sorry, Mark. For everything. For letting her poison my mind."
"You fought for her in the end, Taylor," I said softly. "That’s what matters."
It felt like the nightmare was finally over. Evelyn was locked away in a high-security remand facility awaiting trial for attempted premeditated murder, child torture, and fraud, with no bail. Lily was back home with me, her warm laughter filling my apartment once again.
But three weeks after the trial, I received a thick, yellow envelope in the mail with no return address.
Inside was a single printed photograph.
It was a photo taken from inside a dark room, looking through a crack in a door. The photo showed me sleeping on the couch in my apartment, with Lily asleep in her bedroom down the hall.
The photo was stamped with yesterday’s date.
On the back of the photo, written in neat, elegant, unmistakable handwriting:
May you like
“Did you really think I operated alone, Mark? Look under Lily’s bed.”
